I have a 1997 B7100 HST that has a little over 200 hours on it. I bought it used last summer with around 155 hours on it. The problem I'm now having is that it has a rough idle when the throttle lever is all the way back. If I bump it up a little then is smooths out. I've used another 7100 a couple of years ago and don't remember it idling rough. When it is idling rough the steering wheel vibrates quite a bit. So what could be the cause of a rough idle?

Perhaps add some fuel conditioner and try and go through a tank of fuel with the tractor engine under heavy load.

A 1977 with 155 hours, eh /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif. Could you mean a 1997 (pretty sure there were no B7100 HSD's in '77).

How rough of an idle? It's a diesel, they do idle quite rough to begin with.

I agree with Egon about the fuel, except I would just dump it and change the filter.

I have now used several tank fulls of fuel with a conditioner added and have seen no changes.

When your throttle is all the way back, do you know what RPM you're turning?
My Deere 670 idles a bit rough if the engine is under 1000 RPM's. I just bump it up to around 1200 or so. A little higher idling RPM is easier on the bearings, by the way.
Since none of us can know how rough your engine is actually idling, and you are being somewhat subjective about the issue (as we all would be...trying to troubleshoot without personal experience with your tractor) it's difficult to determine if you've a real problem, or perceived problem..
Since you went thru some tankfuls of fuel with a conditioner, maybe dirty fuel isn't the issue. You could have a partially blocked injector or an injector that went bad (one of the tests a mechanic does on injectors is observe the spray pattern).

If you have the manual for your tractor, does it specifiy an idling RPM, by the way?

My tractor does not have a RPM guage so I do not know what RPM I'm at when the rough idle occurs or at what RPM it smooths out at. How does one check the RPM of a diesel engine?

When it is idling rough if you look at the steering wheel it is vibrating back and forth maybe a 1/2" or so.

What sort of test equipment is required to observe the spray pattern of an injector?
