I'm planning on making a home built yarder along the lines of the rope tows I grew up skiing with in Vt in the 1960's and zip lines we see today.<snip> I use a long (100') 5/8" or so nylon rope that is fed through a couple of snatch blocks. The block that is closer to the log is put up high on a tree with a chain to pull up the log end if possible. Then I just route the rope to the tractor and tie it to a large shackle that is on the drawbar. Drive forward and out comes the log to the trail. I may have to reposition the blocks a time or two. It takes longer but it is a LOT CHEAPER then buying a logging winch.
Also as it was mentioned before: turf tires work surprisingly well for this kind of work as long as you stay out of the mud.
Though I sure would like a logging wench.
