<snip> I use a long (100') 5/8" or so nylon rope that is fed through a couple of snatch blocks. The block that is closer to the log is put up high on a tree with a chain to pull up the log end if possible. Then I just route the rope to the tractor and tie it to a large shackle that is on the drawbar. Drive forward and out comes the log to the trail. I may have to reposition the blocks a time or two. It takes longer but it is a LOT CHEAPER then buying a logging winch.
Also as it was mentioned before: turf tires work surprisingly well for this kind of work as long as you stay out of the mud.
I'm planning on making a home built yarder along the lines of the rope tows I grew up skiing with in Vt in the 1960's and zip lines we see today.
Though I sure would like a logging wench. :)

Here's an Ash that I pulled out of the edge of the woods and about 300yds. to the house, I have already cut it into stovewood, it is 26" at the big end and 16' long. Steering brakes would have come in handy.

Have a 7610.. r-4's with chains on can pull 30' 20" across at the butt with no problem on the slippery clay mud.. It seems that's all we had this spring. But got the wood out anyway.. Pulling the stumps after was a mess though..
