If a 700 pound pig charged me to untie my shoes I know I would poo in my pants. :D:laughing::D:laughing:

Oscar needs some video taken of his escapades. :D

Later,
Dan

When I was a kid raising Berkshire hogs, we built the pens with hog wire and ran a single strand of barbed wire along the bottom of it, attached to the hog wire every couple of feet or less.

My dad raised show hogs for years, but stopped just after I was born and only had a few for personal use. I remember all his hog pens had hog wire around them and the bottom of the fence was lined in corrugated barn metal and buried about 6" into the ground to keep them from digging out. I also remember one hog pen near a water moccasin infested pond. You always could see snakes on the outside of the pen, but you never saw them inside. The hogs would kill and eat every snake that made a mistake of crawling into their pen. I'd bet that Eddie won't have a snake problem with Oscar around.

I remember my dad doing that ... he used about 10 acres, wonder if that makes a difference? I have mine in a 16x32 pen and dad gum it the fence line is the place they want to dig and try to go under.

I have been told about the metal I can see that working ... I have heard pigs are heck on snakes.

I've been thinking about getting pigs for a couple of years. The farmers I've talked to here say to burry the hog wire 12-18" into the ground to keep them from digging under.

I wonder why the snake venom does not bother the pigs....

Eddie and Ryer,

Since your pigs are so tame, her is a way to see how much they weigh. Get a seamstress tape (cloth) and measure around the pig right behind his front legs. Like you would measure your chest, then multiply by 10.1709 and subtract 205.7492

Ex:
46" x 10.1709 = 467.86 -205.7492 = 262# should be accurate within 10# + or -

Found that info online the other day. Here is a link to the article: http://www.thepigsite.com/articles/1106/use-heart-girth-to-estimate-the-weight-of-finishing-pigs

Very interesting day today. The vet came by and castrated Oscar. This was a first for me, and I was shocked at the size of those guys!!!! Probably one and a half golf balls in size for each one. He's six months old and she said that they were bigger then she expected, but so is he.

To sedate him, she needed an idea of what he weighs. The other day, I tried picking him up and reading the scale, but couldn't see it while holding him. During the process, we broke scale.

This morning I measured around his chest and came up with 37.5 inches. When I put that into the formula, I came up with a weight of 175 pounds. The Vet felt that was much closer then my guess of 100 pounds. I'm truly shocked that he's that big at such a young age!!!!!

She said that the younger he is when he's cut, the bigger he will get. Waiting this long will affect how much bigger he gets, but she still feels that 700 pounds is possible.

She also pulled his tusks, but said they were baby teeth and that he'll still grow his regular tusks as he matures. He's a 6 month old, 175 pound baby pig.

He's up and about. His back side isn't too pretty with all the iodine solution that she used. He has a few stitches that will desolve and he's acting like he's kind of sick. He's able to walk around and seems to be favoring sunny spots to sleep. I'm keeping an eye on him, and think he's going to be fine.

Thanks,
Eddie

And the saga continues.
I think you need a sign at the road to your house..

Kinda like Cyril but more like this:

Use extreme caution:
Automatic mud machines in use..

Never seen a pig that could not make mud! as you drive in his gate.

I'll get a professional sign graphic if you are interested...

No he needs one to read "Loafers only The Shoe kind"!
