If you look in any reasonably well-stocked hardware store, they will have "hog rings", "pig rings", and "shoat rings". Three different sizes of an item which looks like a "C" made out of wire, sharpened on both ends.

There is even a "hog ring pliers" used to crimp them on a pig's nose to prevent rooting.

They have a lot of other uses, especially in automotive seat covering, where they are used instead of thread stitches behind back seats of cars.

I even find them in hardware stores in the SF Bay area, not exactly a hotbed of pig farming.
