Hi All,
Have not been on the board for a long while. Update on wife's breast cancer is in the family and friends thread.. Suffice to say, all things considered, things are going okay. The BX2230 gave some respite (an island to veg) during tension filled times.
Legitimate question- when should you change the front transaxle fluid. Owners manual says either 200 or 250 hours but I see alot of people doing it after 50 on the board.
Thank all of you who kept my family in their thoughts and prayers Sorry I have been gone so long.
God Bless,
Pat

PAT,
Glad things are going ok,had that problem in my family its rough.
In my opinion ,50 hours is too soon.these things aint like on a car, that have several thousand miles on them at 50 hours. To me the reccomended sounds more logical.

Pat, glad to hear things are going well. You and your wife will remain in our prayers.

I'll have to go with ALAN'S suggestion.
I changed my front axle fluid at 50 hours and basically wasted 5 quarts of liquid gold. I drained it thinking it might be a good idea to unload any particles that might have been left in the axle during assembly. I drained the fluid through a filter funnel and there wasn't a spec of foreign debris in the oil. I only wish I would have drained it into a clean container so I could have put it right back into the axle. Oh well, live and learn.

Take care,
Jeff

as a dealer we offer a no labour/travel deal for the 50 hr service. we always do the front axle, just to be on the safe side. i would hate to see a piece of metal or gasket sealer (that grey stuff must be real cheap going by the amount of it they put on everything) getting in somewhere and doing damage. i am probably being over cautious but thats ok. :D

If I had done the 50 hour service on my own, I probably would have skipped replacing the front axle fluid. My dealer did my 50 hour service because I needed some other work done that I couldn't do at the time. They changed the front-axle fluid, said they always do. I am glad I had them do it. When I got my BX 2230, I checked the front axle after about 10 hours of use, and noticed it was not even full enough to get any liquid on the dipstick (yes, I know its hard to see, but I checked it by trying to dab the dipstick onto blue paper to see if there was any liquid, and there wasn't). So, I topped it off, but I wondered if the right amount was in there. Anyway, after getting it back from the dealer, no problem, the dipstick read fine. Peace of mind is a good thing.

Your family is in our prayers Pat, best wishes.
I just changed the front transaxle fluid. I bought the tractor used and I'm sure it was well over the service interval, if it had ever been changed at all. The old stuff was a little brown. I kept some of it for my oil can.
If you follow the owners manual, I'm sure you will have no problems.

On My L3600 4 whl. gst I also changed the oil in front 4 whl. using udt when time to do so
Then noticed the seal on the axel flange leaking and removed to replace the seal at the bottom of bevel gear case is a plug easy to remove and when I did it had approximate 1/2 inch of gear parts grit and teeth and after $1100 in parts and then labor. the oil looked good when it was changed.
I now use the 80/90 weight oil.
Wish I had taken pictures of gears with missing teeth bearings full of grit and metal parts.
Some where on another post a comment was made no one has mentioned problems with front ends. Guess I was the only one.

That was me in the (never-ending) UDT vs. gear oil front transaxle thread. I stand corrected and appreciate your post. Bevel gears are expensive.

Pat: Welcome back and praying your wife will be OK. Tractors get unimportant fast with health problems.

The front gears gave out when we were building a 180' long tie stall dairy barn L3600 was being used to move dirt and materials to be installed the operator noticed a problem when going to fill diesel tank the front wheel was flowing oil parked at a slant almost lost the wheel while it was chewing up the gears.
Think the cow manure has effected all the parts of this tractor so far the list of replaced and repaired parts is long and about wore out at 1400 hours.
But it has been used and is needed so keep repairing.
what part of Texas ?
