Got my quote today, for a 16kW generac...wow! More than even I expected (@5300.00, not including hook-up, mileage, or supplies.) Ouch! That is definitely more than I bargained for. I guess more research is in order.

From the list you made of things to run. I do not believe you need a 16K Generator.
We have 12K Briggs & Stratton NG Generator with a 200 amp auto transfer switch. This allows us to run house including water pump, furnace, computers and all other normal living except the electric oven. Cost to run is minimal. Considering there is no tax on the fuel like diesel, gas and propane has.
They have a option for winter use that warms the engine and battery. I do not know it you can purchase one in Canada though.
B&S has a 3 year warranty. Generac last I checked has a 1 year warranty.
Here is a link to their web site.

If you've got your heart set on a Guardian/Generac, my wife told me they were on sale at Cosco and even Sam's Club. You might want to call them or check online. She said they were quite a lot cheaper than the price you got....same unit.

I looked into adding a Generac 7000kw Unit. I think the cost of the unit was about $1900.00 including a 100amp Auto transfer switch. Installer said the Auto transfer box had 3' Pigtails on it, meaning it had to be installed within 3' of the main Breaker box. I need it to be 8' away, not 3'. The total installed price was just under $4000.00. Over $2000 for the install. I was suprised it was the much to get it done. The Unit is going sits outside the house real close to the where the breaker box is located in the basement and the the natural gas line is 4 or 5' away, Only other issue was the gas line feed had to be run out and away from the house a little to meet code requirements that is not be run to close to the electric coming in to the house. Does this install price seem reasonable.

I would install the unit myself. The transfer switch comes pre-wired. The unit also comes with simple install. instructions for the do it yourselfer. You can replace the 3 ft pig tail & add longer wire if needed. Mabe I would go up 1 or 2 sizes on the wire for the longer run.
