When I cut my plate for the ram face on the logsplitter I'm building it was out of an odd shaped piece of scrap 1" steel plate that I had scavenged.

The plate had had several large round holes (6") cut in it among others and a long, narrow piece was left on one side, in addition to the large area on the end. I wound up with a bunch of odds and ends left after I got the ram face plate cut out. Attached are two of the pieces.

After a bit of contemplation I decided that these two pieces oughta work for building a frost point/ ripper tooth for the backhoe.

Since the pieces weren't really as wide as I would have liked and since I wanted to put a knife edge on the front side and I didn't want to grind out a edge in the existing steel, I decided to build up the front edge with weld.

Attached is an image of the two pieces after some build up on the edges.

More images to follow as soon as my camera battery recharges - but I'm now at a point of decision - I've almost got the build-up done on the cutting edge and I have to decide whether or not to put a replacable tooth from Fabco or the likes on - or just build up the end and grind the tip to a point.

Cast your vote - tooth or toothless ?

Tooth pieces welded together, more edge build-up, and ground down some.

Another piece of scrap plate - 3/4" x 4 3/4" x 10" - this will be the plate to mount the tooth and mounting ears for the pins on.

Took some 3/8" x 3" angle and cut four 3" long pieces. Welded some 3/8" plate to those and drilled a 1" hole in each one for the pins using a bi-metal holesaw.

This is mockup of the mounting with the pins in the ears before welding it.
