Backhoe Frost Point/Ripper Tooth

One slight design flaw - the mounts I made for the front pin doesn't quite have enough standoff from the plate - it hits the bottom of the dipper stick - so it can't be curled in as far as I would like. I'm thinking this might be fairly easy to fix with a little grinding of the end of the plate and rewelding. Attached is an image with the tooth curled as far as it will currently go.

Obviously there's more to do.

This is a 10" or 11" stump from a white ash that I cut down last fall. I believe it was living at the time I cut it, although in another image you can see it had some disease.

One of the lateral roots. It's about 4"+ in diameter.

Completely ripped out.

You can see the portion of the trunk where the bark had split, exposing the inner wood of the tree.

Another angle. All and all it took maybe 10 to 15 minutes to rip this one out. I was being sort of cautious because this is the first thing I've actually used that I have welded that was under extreme stress.

After this one, I did another white ash - maybe 5" or 6" in diameter - took about 5 strokes to cut the roots and pop it out. Then I started two more white ash which were bigger - 13" or 14"+ in diameter. I ended up needing to reposition on both of those and about that time the sun went behind the clouds and it got chilly so I went in.

I'm fairly pleased with the performance of the ripper tooth thus far - although I'm sure even larger stumps will be a challenge.

rswyan,

Great idea! Been watching your progress with great interest.

Sure would like to have one of them...guess I better be visiting some scrap yards soon!

Thanks for posting all the photos. Great inspiration! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bill,

Thanks - it was fun to get to actually use something that I made ...... finally. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I started the dump wagon at the end of last summer, the wood splitter in early fall and the landscape rake about a month ago - and none of them are completed yet. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Oh, yeah - and the rear remotes and hyd top link too - don't wanna forget that. I'm pretty close on all of them - but none are actually fully DONE /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Plus it was nice to get outside and get a little seat time ..... for something other than pushing the white stuff around.

Tommorrow is supposed to be cloudy but it will be 51 and no rain - at least until evening - so I know where I'll be and what I'll be doing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It won't be inside that's for sure.

The ripper tooth was pretty easy to make - it doesn't appear (at least from measuring the Kubota buckets) that the tolerances are all that close - just watch that standoff on that front pin mount if ya wanna be able to curl it in all the way /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Scrapyards - or even even welding/fab shops for drops - ought to be able to dial you in at a pretty right cost.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm quite amazed that a small hoe can tackle a stump that size. What is flat bottom dig depth and bucket force for your hoe?The cylinders look fairly small, but do an amazing job. Great job done for near nothin. My hat's off to you.
