Backhoe Backhoe Owners Question??

My 4600 is a compact and pretty much, I think, the same tractor that Dave was asking about a backhoe for.

There really isn't one thing that makes a good backhoe. It's the package combination and the work required of it.

Digging dipper depth is perhaps an indication of the combination of most of the elements of a backhoe operation. Normaly you want to be only using the dipper and not the boom for trenching etc.

I don't want to start a war here, however, I disagree with your statement, You can have the largest hoe in the world, it's useless without serious bucket and dipper strengths.. A man with a 5 ft hoe and serious strengths will out do a guy with a 14 footer..

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have narrowed my selection to either the Rhino 85 or 95. Rhino offers the frame mount kit for either on my tractor. The 95 is less than $1000 more to buy. It provides 12" more digging depth, 17" more reach, 16" more loading height, bucket digging force increases from 3550# to 4400#, and its shipping weight increases from 980# to 1468#. If the tractor can handle it, the 95 seems like a bargain for an upgrade. The loading height seems important as there are times I want to put the soil from a hole on the back of a truck as I dig to haul it away. The 6' height a lot of hoes offer does not allow much of a pile on the back of the truck. I'm not sure if the weight means anything but it lowers its price per pound /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif!!!
Thanks again,
David

Larry, in regard to strength and force. Readings given by hoe manufactures are based on the backhoe's pressure relief valve setting. This number is sometimes HIGHER then the tractors hydraulic pump relief valve setting. Consequently, the tractor relief valve will blow off before getting to the hoe's rated pressure. This will cause the hoe strength preformance to fall off accordingly.
I have a JD970 tractor with a hyd pressure setting of 2,250 psi and a Bradco 408 hoe that has a pressure relief setting of, guess what, 2,250 psi also. On this rig it hard to say which relief valve unloads first.
The exception to the above, of course, are backhoe's with their own PTO driven hyd pumps.

cheers,
george

you're right, that is why I have a pto pump, 14 gpm at 2600psi.. works almost as good as the JD 710 I ran daily for years and years,.. and a 710 is a sizable machine to say the least

Hi...

Size + power = time... and $$$...

A perosn with hand tools can do the same job as a small or large backhoe...

The faster you wanna' go... the more it costs...

Right tool... at the right cost... in an acceptable amount of time & effort... for the job at hand...

Shovel... thru monster machine... all have their places...

There's no 1-best fit for all jobs...

If you can, definitely go for the 9.5' hoe. I think you'll be much happier with all the extra that brings. The CK45 should be able to handle that sized hoe with a subframe mount. You might want to check out Woods and see how they compare with the ones at which you're looking. I know my dealer has put Woods on some DK45s and they seem to be really good and strong. I sure like the looks of the Woods subframes much better than the ones Kioti sells. John

Bob, I added an aluminum pipe to fit over the loader control valve handle and lock my steering wheel straight . Raising bucket, I pull myself along with hoe to move as I dig irrigation pipe trenches, then drop bucket down again to dig. I can go a long way before I have to get off and adjust. I have to adjust a bit more often on slopes due to loader bucket tending to slightly slide downhill from shaking while digging.

David, personally, I would cite bucket and dipper force as most important factors over reach. There aren't too many instances where I actually need more than 10' flat bottom, but many where I wish I had bigger cylinders for stumps etc. As for the load height, I wouldn't pay a dumptruck and driver sitting there all day while I filled his trailer one little b/h bucket at a time. That's what my 3/4yd loader bucket is for when I'm finished digging. Something to consider.

I couldn't agree more , to me THE BEST HOE IS THE ONE SIZED TO YOUR TRACTOR!!! It's entirely up to you to size your project to your tractor and your abilities...
I have owned big and small I can do all I need to do on my property (see web site) with my little guy.
I am not building super highways nor large scale construction just digging some stumps, irrigation lines and lake front maintance.
A side note. When I was flying Heavy lift Helicopters I wouldn't dream of trying to pick up a p*ss ant I simply would use tweasers...
think about it and then size your attatachments to your tractor!!
Dean and BTW experience and control touch often overcomes Horsepower and brute force!!
