Mine are removed, for better mowing and better distribution of mown grass clippings. I don't mow when "everyone" nor even "anyone" is around me. So relax and don't get your blood pressure up. :D
My BP did not go up until the moron that mows the church directly across the street fired a 1.5 inch rock through my garage door . My 4 grandsons . myself and my wife in the garage . Then BP maxed out . Good thing the wife got to speak to him before me ! It is total disrespect which is normal now . If that 10.000$ ZT will not mow with the shield down , either mow more often or give up some of your mowing .

The riding lawnmower I bought the girls is a JD300 and of course has a RIO feature. The last of the girls is now in the process of moving south following their work so I'm going to have to start mowing two lawns. There will be a jumper in my future.
One thing that does annoy me is seeing a neighbor driving a lawn tractor with a grandchild in his lap. I've read that tragic story too many times to not feel queasy every time I see it.
I have tractored my boys and others sitting between my legs . They are not going anywhere . As far as RIO that child is going to be severely if not fatally injured before the deck comes into play . People have to be a part of this , a machine only does what it is told .

Especially when they are mowing the graveled shoulder with the deck discharge pointing toward the road.

Just encountered this again over the weekend. Grass and debris flying out onto the highway. I always cringe as I pass them expecting to hear a thump against the side of the car. I figure if you are going to mow with the chute up, make the first few passes along the road with the chute pointed AWAY from the road.

As well, there will be rocks and debris thrown even with the discharge chute down... just not as much. I always try to get the windows up when passing mowers.
Rotary cutting mowers are dangerous.
Maybe soon they will be declared too dangerous for us to use. Back to the old reel mowers... wouldn't surprise me one bit, but won't be in my lifetime.

I am glad they haven't put such stupidity on zero turn mowers. Likely because they cant figure out how to keep them as zero turns if they have a reverse lock out since you have to reverse at least one lever to turn or both if making a K turn.

Very simple, you set up switches on each handle and when both are pressed the deck shuts off. The reverse switch is a little over kill in my opinion. They should put a toggle switch on the machine that overrides it and resets when the key is cycled so that way if you know you are in the clear you don't have to worry about it but for the folks that like that option it's there.

Thats what Cub Cadet does. Deere however feels that you should have to push the button each and every time.

Actually they have, will shut the deck off if both levers are pulled to the reverse direction. Seen on Troybilt, and Yardman.

The first thing I did was jumper the RIO on my JD 130. Sold it to a neighbor a few weeks ago. Told him how I did it. Up to him what to do with the knowledge.

While traveling in Oklahoma a road crew mowing the medium throwing the debris onto the road sent a missile into the drive front fender of my Trailblazer.
Left a sever dent in the fender. Had I been in my Subaru and a couple of feet farther down the road it would have come through the window. Had enough force it would have cause sever harm to me and probably cause me to loose control of the car.

Notified the Highway Patrol and the Officer took the report and said I could file damages to get the vehicle repaired but did nothing with the mower operator. :confused2:
I guess it will take an injury to get something done.

It will not be an injury ,a death ?

I haven't actually checked but the story that was told was a guy backed over his 3 years old daughter in Cleveland while using a Yardmachine mower. There is a federal ANSI standard that requires the not mow in reverse unless you have a operator override system.

The, lack of a better term, first generation no mow in reverse wouldn't allow the deck to be running period if the mower was in reverse. The next generation which is what we have now, requires that the operator override the reverse system, providing the mower cannot exceed 1 mile per hour in reverse with the blades running..
What is that child doing in the the yard , by herself ?
