Bad Bears

Wow, I've always been disturbed about city people dumping their unwanted dogs and cats on us rural folks, but bears...Wow! That's an entirely different situation.

The mistake you made was calling it in and making it official. Most game wardens that I've dealt with are really very understanding people who know what's going on. Unfortunately, they are controled by beurocrats who are only interested in apperances. Once you make it known that you killed a bear out of season, and without a license, it's official and somebody in an office someplace is gonna want something done about it. It doesn't matter what your situation is or why you did it, just that they can show that they did something. Anything.

If you hadn't called it in, then there's a very good chance that nobody would ever know about it, nor would they care. Problem animals are a headache that the Game Wardens don't generally want to be bothered with. They are too busy dealing with the real criminals out there.

Just my opinion,
Eddie

Eddie,

This is very true and I have learned my lesson. The main reason I called is that it dropped dead right on the edge of my field and someone bowhunting would have been sure to see it.
I work for the Fed's and I can not get caught doing something like this illegally.
There main problem was that I hit it ar 277 yards. Yes exactly 277yrds ( they measured it !!!!) They said " we don't think you can make that shot at the bear while it is on the run." It was a bear not a golf ball !! they are pretty big targets.
I had to tell them that I was on our SORT team at work as was the marksman observer. They quickly stopped in where I work to confirm this.
Like I said they wanted me pretty bad and I asked them if they could wait till I talked to my warden to tell him they were coming. Of course they didn't wait and I knew they wouldn't so I ran down to work on my day off to talk to my warden before they did.
The Warden is not the type that likes surprises like that.
My Warden still askes me if i have seen any more bears, and that incident was 4 years ago !!!

Those of us in much of WV and western MD are all facing a problem with "relocated" bears.

(Sorry Scesnick -- if I were a hungry city bear, I'd much prefer the bird feeders and trash cans in Oakland over those in Davis!).

I don't dare look cross-eyed at the bears anymore. All I can hope for is that they will walk across the border.

It is very unfortunate, but many "problem" bears in Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland are being relocated from populated areas into "rural habitats." They are tagged with Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags before being released. If they disappear, someone comes looking for them.

I don't advocate breaking the law, but if you shoot one trying to crawl through your kitchen window, or eating your dog -- don't tell anybody. Just bury it as fast as you can.

If you do bury one, you better find a quick way to cover the tracks of your D8.

Please don't feed the bears,

Knute

MonkeyMonk,

Whew! What a picture!

I’m not surprised the bear ran away. I can't believe it would ever come back, unless it is a really really sick bear.

Even if I wasn’t a bear, I can’t imagine what my reaction would be, if at 4:30 AM, I spied a naked guy with a flopping mag light and gun, wandering in the woods. I know I'd stay a long long ways from that place!

Please keep us informed. This is getting good.

I shot one once in the Sierras. I was working at a hydro electric plant, and the kids got chased away from the school bus stop. Back then bear tags were $1. I had one, just because. They look a lot like a man, once you get the hide off.

I have learned my lesson never to call Fish and Game. I had a few bear around my house, never shot any but asked around as to what I should do. I have a 2 and a 4 year old, and the last thing I want them to be is a bear chew toy. It is nice to have some elbow room so nosey neighboors are not on your door step all of the time. It is also nice to have an excavator. That bear will be 10 foot deep with in a half hour. It is sad that the law makes you look over your shoulder while protecting your family.
