Good looking labs.
Got to love the dogs, even when they misbehave. Loss is always hard to take, just as bad as loosing a human.

New girl is an escape artist. Except she escapes IN. Gate on back deck barley slowed her down. It's about 4 inches off the ramp, didn't take her long to figure out she could get under it. Wired a few horse shoes across the bottom, no discouragement there.

Giving up on renaming her. She has Riley well ingrained.

Miserable but interesting day.
Wind most all day. I've had enough wind to last a life time in the past few months.
Tooth ache, not real bad, but irritating. Tooth Little Boy knocked loose, also broke leaving a couple of splinters. Infected I guess.
Lots of phone calls, more today than in most 2 week time frames.

Most interesting Mother Bobby, alerted to something. Where & how she alerted told me it was not a chipmunk or rabbit.
Started go look, Sure enough a fat diamond back is going by the barn door. Grabbed a1x3 Board (Only thing close) & was prepared to attack.
Wait a minuet this guy has no rattles. & it's head is very small. A Bull Snake that looks & acts like a rattler.
Good lesson for the new kids on the block. Every time they stuck their nose in, it would hiss & strike. Kids being quite quick jumped back in plenty of time.
I don't think bull snakes strike quite as far as a rattler. But at least they know know that a snake may not be their friend.
Not thrilled that it went into the barn. Hope it does not stay there long.

More later,
Jim

Thanks, We like the Chocolate Labs, but they are hard to see in the woods at night. Plus I am partial Red / Green Color Blind and they blend in. I got a reflective harness for MAX Max - reflective harness 4.jpg he managed to get his head behind a tree, but even with the snow you can see the reflective quite well.

Good looking labs.

We knew she had high blood sugar, but I had decided not to put her through testing every day and insulin shots. She went in to get some fluid by IV and just passed over night - at least she was sedated and had no pain. Our little girl was happy and digging at mole trails until just before we took her in for the IV - we expected to bring her home in the morning and that did not happen. I know we will see her again - Heaven can't be Heaven without dogs !

Jim Many years ago was traveling from Tombstone thru Gleason toward the Fort Bowie road and about where the Apache rd. crosses came across a Rattle Snake and it was large. so stopped the car and just to look at it. While standing there a van load of tourists from New Jersey stopped and asked where the For Bowie Military base was. Before telling them,
Asked if they knew what a rattle snake looked like and they said no so told them to back up would show them.

Husband Wife and half dozen preteen age kids got out and stood looking at the coiled snake

Took a Yucca stalk and let the snake strike at it. then explained how only 1/2 of length is all it could strike. But 16 inches is enough to get what it is after. Then gave the rattlers to them and told them go back the direction they had traveled and look for a sign to the Old Fort. Always wondered if they found it.

The Tucson wind caused me to pack up and leave a good job or start to wonder why ever moved there.

Hi Ken & all,

Well the dogs did good today. Bout time.
An illegal walked by the north fence & started towards the gate (it's locked) They watched him going through the brush, then start towards the gate. In a flash all three of them were at the gate & in no uncertain terms they let him know he was not welcome. He turned & walked north a little ways & must have turned south as they continued to track & bark.

Soon I could see a vehicle with flashing lights on top, not very close but they watched it. Soon a Border Patrol agent came to the gate. Dogs didn't like him any better. Went out to talk to him. Took a little doing to get them quieted down. Told him what I knew & he went scouting around south, back north & then east again. Dogs tracked him as he went. They were sort of taking turns as to which one would lead.

Don't think any of them would actually attack or bite. But the 3 of them are somewhat intimidating. Sure would make me think twice before entering a place.

In general Riley & Little Boy are still rotten.

Was low on dog food, for the second time they emptied all 4 bowls. Then proceeded to destroy a sack of bird seeds & get in other trouble. Off to town, one of my least favorite things to do. While there got 3 rolls of tie wire ( baling Wire) & a good pair of fencing pliers. 50# of dog food & 40# of bird seeds.

Still windy in day time, buffeted the truck around on the way into town. Little calmer on the way home.
Were it not for the wind it is almost perfect weather. High 50s / low 60s at night - high 70s & low 80s in the day time.

Jim

Lie goes on, world still going around, sun comes up & goes down, moon comes up & goes down.
Wind has calmed down pretty much. Nothing to a gentle breeze.

Dogs slightly better behaved. Mostly because they wear themselves out playing & chasing. They started a new game a while back. Tug a war or takeaway??
Riley is very athletic, jumps up several several feet & walks on her hind legs, a few steps forward or backward.

Kind of a strange year 9 winter / spring, critters & weeds both confused.

First a picture or 2 of the lovers. Some of the really cute stuff then do goes on so fast no way to get pictures.

lovers 2.jpg - lovers 3.jpg - lovers 5.jpg

Mother Bobby & spoiled brat Riley.

Now on to the weeds. Forget the name of this plant. It's about 10 years old ( As are most of the others.) First time it has ever flowered, clusters of little white flowers that do no smell good. But only on a few branches . It also shot up over twice to over twice the size before winter.
Ocitillo Also shot up a lot, 1 stalk flowering & 1 just making leaves.
Purple Leaf Plumb, jumped up 2+ feet as well. Flowered out real pretty, hummers were happy, & other small birds eating the flowers. 2 Days later its flowers were all gone. Birds ate them???

Question for the lab folks,
Most labs that I have seen are rather husky.
Riley is far from husky & never will be. Are some labs slim???
