Yes, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) can go bad if it becomes contaminated or if it is stored improperly. It is recommended to use DEF within one year of purchase and to keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness.

Probably by the production date. If it’s more than a year, don’t use it. If the jug has been sitting open long term, don’t use it. If sitting outside in the sun, don’t use it.

You can get a DEF tester or a refractometer to see if it's bad. If bad, pour on lawn as it's a fertilizer.

If you buy jugs, ALWAYS make sure the seal is intact before opening. Years ago there were reports of WalMart jugs refilled with water.

thanks to all for your help. i bought a 250 gal tote with about 100 gallons of def; at an auction. but it had a pump system on it that i wanted, so i made out ok.

Yeah, I sure wouldn't use DEF that has an unknown history. It takes VERY little to contaminate DEF.
