Would be a good price if it were not junk!!! Those 1500 don't have water pumps. They run pretty hot.

VABill,

I hope your first post in not your last. I also hope your thick skinned enough to see that TBN replies are directed at another unsuspecting buyer - seller situation where the price is too good and tractor too perfect.

Nothing personal.

More often than not, these (VN) reconditioned tractors are misrepresented by less than scrupulous peddlers. If you find yourself in a situation where you get no financial restitution for the repairs, our your stuck with the tractor, there are people here that will supply you with manuals, parts and expert advice.

There have been a few success stories from TBN'rs who have purchased a VN rebuild, but they seem to have had accessed this web site first. Discovered here what to look for, or as California said; gamble and hope your lucky (paraphrasing).

Fill out your profile - just a general location, let us know whats going on and if you can resolve the problem. You are in a powerful position to warn others of what not to do and hopefully how to resolve your (their) buying experience.

Seems to me, if the seller will fix or send you parts to fix the front end, everything else you mention is easily fixable. If it were mine I would fix it up and pat myself on the back for getting myself a $4000 tractor for $1912. On the other hand, if you are incapable or unwilling to do the work yourself, maybe a gray market tractor is not the best option in the first place.

I second LMTC's post. It is grossly misrepresented. These "reconditioned" tractor sellers adverstising & products border on fraud. If any one tried selling a car this way, the authorities would be on them in no time. Which would you pay more for a 10 year old car with a new paint job & 0 miles on the odometer that the sellers says is completely rebuilt. (It could have been totalled & have 300,000 miles on it.) or the same car with faded paint & 30,000 miles? You know the"reconditioned "seller is trying to hide the condition & use of the vehicle. Why believe anything else he says is true?

Why do think this tractor was reconditioned in VN? Or at all?
The war is over. We have new enemies now! I just can't see why u r assuming facts not in evidence. It looks like a piece of crap! The VN rebuilds look good, like brand new. I think this seller made up the whole story about being reconditioned and this newbie should wish he had a VN rebuild..... Just my opinion.

If your reply is to me personally: VABills' post was seeking advice, asking for opinions and help. He said that he doubted that his Yanmar was reconditioned in Japan....No Japanese exporter of Yanmars ships anything other than used tractors, implements and parts.

If statistics dictate a high failure rate, what difference does the country or origin make? If they were rebuilt in Canada, Peru or Australia then used extensively for 2 - 3 years, cosmetically detailed and hour meters set back to zero and shipped here then the failure rate would be the same. So whats this war is over thing??

I have access to both Grey tractor importers from Japan and Vietnam. The Vietnam importer is 30 miles from me and convenient enough to get parts in a hurry...but over 90% of the time the parts are as bad or worse for wear. So I don't use them anymore.

IMO you have to own at least one of each to know the difference and I own one now. I also own a few used from Japan Yanmars and there is a difference.

The good news is the engine and tranny/hyds work.

If you can get the seller to send you front axle parts.. i think you will be in good shape.

The weather checking ont he tires is for all intents and purtoses normal.

I've got a few antique tractors from the 50's and 60's. Some of them have original rubber. In fact.. I just replaced 3 tires last year.. All were bald or had tread with weather checking and dry rot. I'm guessing your tires will last a long long time.

The brake issue may be as simple as a bit of corrosion on a rockshaft or bushing.. if you are lucky.. that's a simple fix.

These tractors are thermosyphon, and antifreeze mix should be real low.. like 70% water.. 30%af.. max. if you had straight AF.. it may contribute to the problem.

Drain it into a clean bucket, and then run a hose thru that radiator and see what kind of flow you get. If you can get a full hose flow, refill with water and a thin af soloution.

I am most grateful for everyone's input. I find all of your posts very helpful. Your formum helped me decide to by a Yanmar grey market tractor in the first place.

It appears that my problems can be thought of in two parts, the first being financial and the second part being ethical.

The seller is offering to repair the problems and I have agreed to ship him the left front gear assembly and axel.
The shipping cost is $18.00 since he lives only two hours away. He owns a garage and can easily fix it after getting the parts. He is also stating that he will show me how to fix the overheating problem and address my other issues. Of course I don't think I should have to spend my time doing any of the work becuase I don't have time for it and it was advertised with no problems. I can handle light mechanical work with no problems. I don't mind doing maintence and minor fixes. From a standpoint of soving this problem, I am going to make the best of it and work with the seller for sake of getting the tractor going again. I think the tractor is worth more than the $1912 I paid for it so when it's repaired I should get a good return on my investment from clearing my farm with it. Later on I could sell it if I can afford a new one. The seller claims that he has $2200 in it from the wholesale container price but conducts all his auctions with no reserve and claims that he lost money on it. He also delivered the tractor the next day after the auction for $200.00. Considering he has 100% feedback, I want to give him and the tractor a chance since the engine is good and supposedly rebuilt with only 28 hours on the rebuilt engine. If I bought one of the recon's from Texas, I would pay much more and and pay around a $1000.00 for shipping.

For the ethical part of the issue, how can I belive anything he says about the reconditioning of the tractor since he said it was reconditioned in Japan and then imported. Also, he advertised the 1500D as being a 21hp tractor, but everything I have looked at on the net suggests that the 1500D is only
17hp. The tractor had not been serviced prior to selling and now both the seller and myself are paying for his unethical risk in misadvertising the tractor.

If the fixes go well and nothing else happens, then this will end up still being a good buy.
Comments welcome from all...

Bill
If push comes to shove, We have a 1500-D parts tractor here
its almost complete.
Its to bad that this happened to you on your first machine,
Yanmars are really good tractors, unfortunately NAFTA has opened the door to the thugs of the world to flood our country with cheap products from watches to purses, and MAYBE your tractor was one of those imports.
