As another poster mentioned, the pink color is off-road fuel.It is the same fuel with dye added and won't harm your tractor.

Don I would like to go a step further as if you are using farm fuel it might have a pink tone to it. If what you see is milky like, than you have water. To remove a filter and drain it could be risky, if you fill it back up and reinstall you could be ok but open the throttle up at least to half so as the air passes through you will have enough rpm to carry. The engine will miss for a bit but you should be ok.

Art,

I can't say for sure (since the fuel came from my dealer), but it is a pinkish color in the fuel filter bowl, so I am going to guess that it is farm or off-road diesel fuel. It is also is crystal clear pink ... not milky or turbid at all, so there doesn't appear to be any obvious water contamination.

I have put another couple of hours on the tractor, and there hasn't been a hint of a problem, in terms of the heavy knocking sounds that occurred earlier.

Don, do you think it's possible that you got just a tiny bit of water in it, and it's now passed on through? And I notice in this thread, and in the manual, that "cleaning" the fuel filter is mentioned, so I'm sure that's OK, but I've forgotten right now just what they cost, but it's so little that I've never cleaned a fuel filter. If I take it out, I throw it away and put a new one in.

Bird,

There's no way to know for sure, but what you are suggesting is my current theory as to what happened ... and that is a tiny slug of water came through the fuel system, passed on through (when I was experiencing the bad knocking sounds), and is gone at this point. Nevertheless, I am still going to follow-through on pulling the oil filter at 10 hours and sending that in to my dealer, so they can cut it open and see if there is an inordinent amount of metal shavings/particles. If that comes up negative, I am just going to assume it was a bit of water working its way through the fuel system (and cross my fingers it never happens again).

don: i agree with some of the others, seems like water. if there was something bad with the engine, it would NOT GO AWAY. if your machine was sitting on dealers lot for any length of time, would not be hard to pick up a drop or 2 of condensation.

Well, I don't want to put a damper on your suspicion, but as I was reading through this, I thought of another possibility.

It's possible that there was "something" floating around in the oil/crankcase, and it momentarily blocked the oil pickup tube. Being that it's a relatively short tube, a little suction may have been enough to tear it (whatever "it" may have been), and now you are (again) pulling oil through a semi-obstructed pickup screen.

I would expect this to be a rare occurance on a new machine. Probably unlikely, but still a possibility.
