Now, to be fair, didn't your junior high school counselor urge you to choose Spanish as your second language? Mine sure did, and I went with French. I've regretted that decision for the last 30 years. :laughing:

We only had french, no choice.

What's frustrating is asking for assistance and getting someone who knows less than I do in that department, not a kid either but 40+ year old. A few people are really sharp, but yesterday was a fiasco.

I feel your pain... I seriously couldn't tell you how many times people come up to me in Lowes or HD and say, " You look like you know what your doing, could you help me?" I don't mind, I feel bad for them; not everyone is a contractor...

I realize that for many people, working at big box stores is the only current option. However, government should stay out of it and let the market dictate the terms.

When this becomes the case, it is time to re-evaluate your location. There are many reasons to stay, and many reasons to move someplace else. Only one person can make this decision, hopefully they carefully consider all options.

Out here, lowes or HD are your best choice! I have a local "lumber yard" / true value that is about 5 miles away. I will only get an item or two (usually screws or nails due to bulk pricing). If I need lumber, I'll drive 45 miles to the Lowes or HD in the big city. My last project needed 220 2x4's..... I went to HD and pulled just about everyone straight as an arrow, no checks, no chunks missing. Tossed aside maybe 10. The local lumber yard charges 25-30% more and could'nt find a good one out of 50-60 studs....pure junk. All of their lumber is just junk!

I don't care if the store maintanance is done in house or subbed out. As long as they have what I need, at the best price, that's what matters.

Thats almost as bad as the local tractor dealer here. He lets his "new" tractors sit OUTSIDE.

When a company is formed, their goal is not to employ people, their goal is to make a profit.

Illinois passed a $15 minimum wage law recently along with many other states. I've noticed a lot more automation at large stores. We bought some items online "site to store" at Walmart the other day. They have a "Jetson" like automated distribution system now and I'm guessing it has eliminated a few employees at each store. They've also changed almost all of their cashiers to automated. The trend will continue as long as government pushes higher minimum wages. Companies will continue to cut positions to protect their bottom line and return a profit to share holders.

Evidently Lowes has determined they can save money by jobbing out some of the labor. Another factor to consider is an unemployment rate that is 3.7% now. That's basically full employment and everyone that wants to work is working. Finding qualified people is a big problem for employers right now.
