Baling hay along road sides

My grandpa use to cut the grass along the highyway often when I was a kid. The highyway is much busier now and just to dangerous.

Illinois is allowing it. You can bale along your property, and anyone that gives you the okay to.

In many states you have to have a minimum amount of liability insurance in force to do this.
I think here at least, you can get in trouble if there is a reason for them to ask you for it and you don't have it.
Good luck

I know a guy baling some ditch hay. He says horses have a lot more time to sort it than he does.

He must be going door to door cause I noticed he's cutting 5-10ac patches along the way hope he makes it down to my place. I don't want to bushog the 3rd time this year 3' tall already and 7-10" of rain coming from Isaac. 60ac 6' at a time just takes to long. Horses and cows can't keep up> Sure wish I had a mower/rake/baler.

it is called ditch hay Very popular here in southern MN You have the rights to the ditch on your land. I let my neighbor have my ditch. he gets three nice alfalfa bails each cut. Yes alfalfa, rural water stuck a 10 inch water main in the ditch and replanted with alflafa. not the best cover crop. It is funny to see all the bales along the highways. Ditch hay will be valuable this year. Drought

just north of you in Manitoba Canada t is really common to cut / bale the ditches.
Other than maybe the very rare dead animal no garbage to speak of... its guess because its illegal in Canada to throw garbage in the ditches ours are very clean.

Animals get picked up by gov't workers so really only the odd fresh one that someone hadn't phoned in yet for a pickup.

cheers

Throwing trash along roadsides is illegal here too, and it does get picked up by volunteer crews. Government here is too broke to pick up the animals though, and we have LOTS of deer.

Some baling is going on along I5 north of Sacramento in the areas around traffic interchanges (generally triangular-shaped fields maybe half acre or so in size). Haven't seen any true "ditch" baling around here yet.

Hay is still available around here. Much of it is grown on irrigated fields. My neighbor has 30 irrigated acres--20 acres in alfalfa and 10 in sudan grass (he's trying to reestablish alfalfa in that 10 acres). He's got a few hundred bales of alfalfa and sudan stacked in his barnyard. He baled the 20 acres of alfalfa Monday and delivered two loads to another neighbor using his New Holland self-propelled bale stacker yesterday.

When we first bought our place 8 years ago there was an old fella that bailed the roadsides year after year. He was about a thousand years old and his tractor helped launch Noahs Ark too. Haven't seen him for the last 2 years. I would think he is bailing hay in heaven now.

I've seen the roadside bailing done in South Dakota, they even have restrictions on when one can start so the Pheasants can hatch their eggs without being "baled".
