If you're talking about one of the old balers that made looser bales and didn't have near the weight, size, or compaction ability then yes you may be able to get by with the bigger compacts. These new balers though I sure wouldn't do it and I wouldn't recommend doing it with an older one. If you need to bale hay buy a utility tractor. That's what they were made for.

That's the one! What's the latest on this story? After learning more about round balers, I'm surprised that Kubota would use this for advertising. Given this picture, I think this guy has a good argument for himself.

Buck,
They flat out denied him warranty coverage. Said the baler was the cause and he never should have been baling with it as the tractor was not designed for baling hay. I don't know how they can say that seeing the brochures with the round balers. He's going to sue them according to the Moss/Magnuson Act so we will see.

Glad to read he's not letting this go. Meanwhile today and tomorrow I'm going to cut and bale the hay off a field with my L3710.
