If you like repairing your chainsaw then go for it. My FIL brought his saw to me asking why the oiler stopped working. I looked at the oil and asked where it came from, black and nasty. He told me used motor oil. I found the oiler line had turned to goo, I assume from the fuel that is always present in used oil. He no longer does that and there's been no more issues.

I don't know guys... Seconds before oil came out of your engine it was still good enough to circulate in a tight tolerance, high tech engine of a $40K vehicle.
All of a sudden it's not good enough to be used for a few seconds more, on a one-way-trip through a bar chain lube application in a tree through the nasty dirty bark?

Good point, it was running through an oil pump in an engine..... I can see where it wont stick to the bar& chain but wouldnt think it would hurt the oil pump? Chime in guys!!
Btw my saws get high quality b&c oil but i used to run gallons of old used oil thru old homelites and jonsereds:)

My dad never used anything but used motor oil in his chainsaw, I can't remember any problems, or even if there was a dedicated bar oil back then. I run it in my saw, for the little amount of cutting I do here. The book for my electric pole saw says to not use bar oil because it's too thick and sticky for the oiling system (Remington 1015P)

No way in Well am i going to run gummy old junk in my saw. 8 months and 1000 cord later it, and my other 3 saws have seen nothing but clean bar oil. Thats the way im rollin. . . . John

Yeah, so uh.. Which brands of commercial bar oil are thinned with gas or diesel? I'm having trouble finding that data ;)

More than the oil pump,I would be concerned that the used oil would not cling well to the bar and chain. And bars and chains are not cheap anymore.

Yup, bar oil is like corn syrup, used engine oil is much thinner usually
