bar/chain oil vs used engine oil?

Wow I am super shoked that some people are using motor oil to lube a chain. Bar oil has tach so it can stay on the chain and do its job. Motor oil will be gone before it gets to the top of your bar. I bet the chain smokes with motor oil?

The only used oil not good enough for a saw chain is oil drained into a dirty bucket. If it was that bad you'd be draining it from a blown engine.

I doubt it makes much difference in component life, the chain is wet, everythings wet, oily. It flings off the tip & makes a mess, a PITA.

The only difference I've noticed in the past 5 years when using used motor oil is, I saved $600.00 from not buying bar oil, I paid $500.25 6 years ago for my chainsaw, I did use bar oil for the first 6 months while under warrantee. At $10-15.00/gal, bar oil adds up quicker then the price of a new saw.

I agree. The oil from a car engine is super clean. It's the edge of the pan it runs across, and the catch pan you collect it in that will have the dirt.
Speaking of dirt, you ever notice how much sand and dirt is in the bark of trees that get cut.

My used motor oil is not garbage, it runs my Jeep 5000 mile's before it's changed, and it could probably go 6000 mi. before I change it, I think there is some high quality motor oil that can go 10,000 miles before it's changed, the 3000 mile oil change is long gone. Motor oil is a lubricant, and that's all a saw chain needs.
Yes, I cut a lot dirty trees and it's mostly around low lands where spring water runs high. But I think I heard Red Green say that the rain washes the dirt on the trees, then you end up with clean dirt, clean dirt wont dull your chain so quick as dirty dirt will, so if you can, try to cut trees that has clean dirt on it, and don't cut the trees that has dirty dirt on them, dirty dirt will dull your saw chain quicker.

Red green was brilliant!
Red Green is my hero!!!

I put used motor oil in my saws all the time. I think it is a bit ridiculous to think it would do any real damage but I could be wrong. Other than being too thin and having to maybe use a bunch more because of the fact that it flies off the chain faster, it does the job IMO. Saves lots of money! It was in my automobile engine and could have gone a few more thousand miles, it surely can go around my chain bar a few times!

The only (preservative oil) I ever heard of is used motor oil, I soak my log brow with it, and the (tackifier) I use is bar oil, I mix it with used motor oil, I take 1 gal. of bar oil, mix it with 1 gal. of used motor oil, it took me quite a while to do the math, but the answer I got is 1+1=2-1/2.

That's better than just motor oil, but you're still diluting the tackifiers.

There are many preservative oils for industrial use that include tackifiers. It's not something you'll find at TSC, that's for sure. What we use is a mil-spec preservative oil used to coat the interior of new gearboxes prior to shipping.
