Does the bar tires on the BX22 mess up a yard during mowing? Any comments, I worry about the traction of the turf tires in the winter.

I would suppose that a lot would depend on the type of soil you have and how dry it was. I have turfs on my BX2200, and when the ground (tough clay) is wet, I can still get some marking, and am glad I don't have bars, since I am a bit picky about my front lawn. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif So far traction hasn't been a problem for me, even in snow. The only time I've lost traction is when using the box blade....

My bar tires on the BX2200 don't present a problem on grassy lawn areas.
If you're running throgh damp stuff or clay, it may but it's just fine on the lawn...no tracks.

As far as winter traction goes, I have little complaint about the turfs. I think I will invest in chains for this winter, but I have plowed a good deal of snow without.

I've got bars on a BX22 and mow 2 acres of lawn. There is no trace of the bars on the grass. Our soil is shale and has been quite wet lately. The only problem I've seen is if you let off the hydro pedal fast, the Bota wants to stop now, and the bars will dig in and take some turf with it. I'm not sure if the turf tires will do the same.

For pushing the FEL, the bars really show their stuff and dig in in the dirt.

I bought bar's with my BX22 but havent put them on yet because of fear of damaging the lawn. I guess I'll try it out!! I would like the extra traction plus they make the tractor look so much tougher!!

My conclusion is that it’s a matter of traction. When tires slip on grass they will leave marks. I’ve been quite happy with using bar tires for mowing because they grip better. My previous equipment had the turf tires and I wouldn’t want to go back.

Do a search for a similar thread on this subject, around March/April 2002.
A big debate started about the use of the term "bar turf", but contained info that you may find useful.

Last fall, I bought a set of ag (r-1) tires/wheels for my BX 2200 for approx. $300.00.
This spring, when lawn mowing time began, I swapped only the front tires for the turf, leaving the ag tires on the rear. The only time marks are left is on muddy turf.

After two months of this, I will leave the rear ags on all the time, swapping to fronts ags for ground engaging implements. (box blade, york rake, & rotary cutter) The traction gained is significant.
Changing the front tires takes approx. 10-15 minutes.
Remember to torque the wheel studs properly after installation and use.

Hope this is helpful.

Another option would be turf tires with chains. I just bought a set for the back and they made a big difference when working dirt. They cost me a little over a hundred dollars delivered.
