Made a big mistake today. I went back to the Kawasaki dealer and asked what the 4010 runs for. They said $9,199 for the single seat, and $9,999 for the Trans Mule with two bench seats.

I really liked the Trans Mule. I like how it's set up, all the storage it has and that power steering is REALLY NICE!!! It's my dream machine. With $2,000 down, payments are $180 a month for 5 years with the roof added on to it as my only add on.

If I understand your post correctly, it appears you bought the 4010 Trans4x4?
If that is correct, you DID NOT make a big mistake. You will be very pleased with your new Mule. Once you get over your "buyers remorse". Congrats!

Eddie,

I have the 4010 TransMule Diesel. Bought it last October and it now has 155 hours and 800 miles on it. It is a little loud, but I love the performance and torque of the diesel. The Trans Bed takes about 2 minutes to change from 2 person to 4 person.

It will haul a bunch. I've had 1000 pounds of fertilizer in the back of mine and it squated a little, but performance wise you couldn't tell it was back there. Not sure about the gas model, but I do know it is quieter than the diesel.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Kawasaki. The 610, 3010, and 4010 are all good vehicles and now they all have power steering and fuel injection. I wouldn't even consider buying one that was older with a carb....

As far as the Kubota I think I would have a hard time getting used to the hydro transmission. If your like me, when I floor it I expect it to go. My neighbor has a 50 hp Kubota tractor with the hydro transmission and I finally drove it the other day. If you get in a bind and push hard on the pedal it would almost choke down. You had to really run the revs up. With the RTV's you can't run up the revs unless you install an aftermarket hand throttle. The throttle from the factory is tied to the pedal and you have to feather it if you get in a "bind" or you will not have any power. Unless they have worked out this issue....

JMHO,

Chris

Eddie, you don't have to pay extra for a roof from Kawasaki. Essex Manufacturing in Southlake, Texas (near DFW Airport) has a full line of Mule accessories. I bought our roof from them. As I remember, it was only about $275 for our 3010 back in 2004.

i just bought a utv and i considered some of the same routes that you have, so i'll offer my opinions and what i found:

this was for a vehicle mostly for the ball & chain to do yard work. we had a pair of polaris atv's (2000 sportsman 400 & 2001 sportsman 700) that we used to do a lot of trail and mud riding with, but now they only do yard work, and i decided that a newer and more functional vehicle was in order. i didn't have an interest in a trail rider, so i was not willing to pay any premium for suspension and frills, meaning that many of the flashy offerings from polaris, yamaha, kawasaki, and others were not really considered. i also didn't need the top end of the work line, nor did i want to spend upwards of $15000 (or more) on a fully decked out kubota or john deere.

i really didn't want to lay out much cash to do this, so i set my sights on something close to what i could get for the value of the two atvs i wanted to replace. new utvs pretty well run the range from $6000 to $15000, depending on size and features, and i wanted to stay at the low end of the price point. the mule 610 4x4 was the real leader in value for the dollar at around $7000 list. let's face it: kawasaki has been making mules for a long time now, so it's safe to say that these are going to be a good functional piece, otherwise people wouldn't keep buying them. i also looked at the rtv 500, and to be honest, i'd swear that it's a twin to the mule 610. i'd like to see them side by side. there are some horror stories about the rtv 500 on the net, but i think there are as many stories about them just needing a little fine tuning and then you are all set. kubota is in the same category really: they're a proven company, and anything they sell is likely going to be a decent piece of equipment.

since i had set a rough price that i was willing to spend, i did a lot of looking for used machines. sad part is that there aren't often a lot of them to choose from. either 10+ years old and used up, or one year old and still high priced. the local dealer had a pair of used rtv 500's for sale and i was literally a day or so away form buying one of them when i found the machine i did buy: a 2006 john deere gator hpx trail. family members already had a couple gators, so i was familiar with them and knew exactly what i was getting into. the machine already had all the bells and whistles added: electric/hydraulic dump body, bedliner, roof, windshield, cab/body screen divider, and even floormats, lol. it also only had 45 hours on it. new it would cost probably $12000-$14000, and i ended up paying around half that, which was still less than a new mule 610 or the used rtv 500.

i'm pretty happy with what i got, but i would have been equally happy with either the mule or rtv that you were looking at. the one thing i will say is: don't buy a low end and expect it to be everything. a low priced utility is not going to have the weight to handle large loads. another thing to remember is that just because it has suspension, don't expect it to take the bumps out. a ranger, rhino, etc will suck out the bumps, but a utility gator or rtv won't. i could take my sportsman over uneven ground at 50+ mph where my gator would be a challenge at 20 mph.

Or you can spend about 50, have fun with a little project, & make your own out of plywood, 4 U-bolts & some black "Fence Coat" paint from Tractor Supply :) I can actually stand on this one & trim tree branches, clean the gutters, etc.

"One" more thing (I keep thinking of things) to mention: My smaller 610 seems to be viewed about like a harmless golf cart by people I pass. I drive this thing all over the place, including on the sides of public roads; Neighbors nearly always smile & wave. I suspect a bigger, and/ or louder, and/ or meaner-lookin' UTV wouldn't get that same pleasant reaction nearly as often. Mine = "Aw look, that looks like a lot of fun!!" ... Polaris Ranger RZR (for an extreme example) = "Look at that d@mn menace. Call the cops!" :)

Also, many, many cops have passed me while I'm driving on the grass beside roads, & so far not one has stopped me. I think the larger/ louder/ meaner-lookin' your UTV is, the more likely an encounter with the law.

Of course, if you have no plans to ride where you're not supposed to, none of this probably matters.

I have a SMV emblem on the back of my mule and drive it about 1 mile down a 2 lane paved road each day to my grandfathers to check on my crops. As long as the vehicle is not capable of going faster that 25mph and has a SMV emblem on the back and your using it in Ag then you are covered. I've had 2 or 3 deputies and a city office pass me on the road and wave.

Of course, I do watch for cars and pull to the side when cars get behind me. I often can go the 1 mile without even seeing a car.

Some farmers down the road have a Kubota RTV 1100 that they drive about 2 miles to their chicken houses several times each day.

The problem with the Polaris and some others is that their top speed is too fast to qualify under the Ag exemption.

Honestly everything out there in the UTV world is good in their own way...just depends on your intended use. They are all very different in that respect.

I bought the Trans Mule yesterday and will take some pictures and post them over the weekend. I've driven it around my land and really enjoy how easy it is to operate. The ride is very smooth, and it has plenty of power with four people in it. I never put it in 4wheel drive, and never needed to. I drove smooth roads, up steep hills and over rough, loose soil that I've been tearing up with the dozer. It never faltered or had any problems.

It's quite and easy for all four of us to talk without raising our voices. The power steering is a dream, as is the automatic transmission. My mom was giddy about it. She is so happy that I can't even describe it.

The top was backordered and should be here in ten days. I looked at the tops Jim posted the link to, but decided to go with the factory top. It's a really nice top and for the extra money, I think I'll be happy with it.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I didn't want to spend this much money, and didn't think that I'd need such a fancy vehicle, but now that I have it, I'm very glad that I did. If nothing else, it's just going to make it more fun living here and having friends over.

Describes me every time I buy ... well, just about anything. I never know when to say when.

It should be great fun, Eddie!
