Barlows - always a good bet?

   / Barlows - always a good bet? #31
Hi,
I read alot of posts that rate Barlow's extremely high, but I am not able to agree with these. I have tried contacting the Brady person (is this actually a person or is an internet alias) on several occasions and have not recieved an answer in a timely manner.

Makes you wonder if you have trouble getting ahold of the business to make a purchase will they be around for any issues that might arise?

Just my thoughts but I have decided that maybe a Brick and Mortar local business might be the best way to go.

Another thought, who is the JohnThomas character? Another internet alias, maybe?

Opinions?

 Nice first post.

You are of course entitled to your opinion but as you state yourself, there are a lot of posts raving about the service and pricing at Barlows, many of which were written by well respected contributing members of this forum. You, on the other hand have no history or credibility here yet. Attacking a long standing well respected member like John Thomas is not going to win you many points.

Just sayin is all....

Whoa! I apologize if I stepped on some toes. I know that I just joined but I have been reading and following this forum for at least 10 years and have been able to glean alot of knowledge here.

However I am not able to convince myself that frequent and many posts make anyone become an expert on a subject. Perhaps real experience with tractor and/or farms may be better experience than just typing?

I John Thomas buys so much equipment from Barlows, I guess he is satisfied with their service, however I seem to remember something about he lives close to their store? I live in Ky, but I am several hours away from the Barlow location. I am just expressing my opinions and mine is what it is.

If it was me I would drive the couple of hours vs try to play phone tag or go back and forth with emails. Double that this time of the year. With the holidays they could be short handed.

just a note on that.. we do this same thing all the time but are careful to point out that it is effectively tax evasion and many states, particularly in the north east are catching on to it. CT especially. a use tax is still due to your home state. Its just not the obligation of the dealer to collect and remit it.

I'm not sure if people realize this. If you borrow money to buy the tractor there's a record somewhere (either state or town) showing Kubota as the lien holder. Tax on a $20k~$30k tractor is something most states are going to want to get their hands on.

Hi,

Another thought, who is the JohnThomas character? Another internet alias, maybe?

Opinions?

Opinions you ask. I have one which I will express since you asked so .....well you asked. I'm real, (character? Is that how your Mother told you to refer to people you don't know)
I live in Somerset (more specific than telling just Kentucky). I worked for the Commonwealth of Ky for 27 and a half years, bought 4 years of state retirement for 4 years of Military service plus bought 5 more years because the state let me plus had one year of unused sick time to add to my retirement for a total of 37 1/2 years service to count for my retirement monthly check and Social Security check plus Teachers Retirement check. I taught for UK for 6 years and was a Real Estate Broker and am now a Christian Counselor and manage some rental property. Have 3 Grand children and a wife named Cira. Attend Potters Place Church. Vehicles and Kubotas owned are listed in my profile/signature. Is that getting to specific?
Several members of this forum have been to my home to drive/test my Kubotas before buying one, others have been to my home to buy some implements that I no longer needed and one bought a F3080 from me from NC and Barlows delivered it to him when they were going to NC, for a small fee.
If you have more "real/true interest" in who I am, you can call me, come see me or tell me where you live in Ky and I may come by and see you, I've worked all of Ky in my past career and know people all over the state so give your real name and where you live and we'll go from there. Do you have any more questions as to my being a real person or were you just trying to be "nasty" because Brady didn't answer your call as soon as you thought he should? I can also vouch for Brady being a real person as well as his Mother Velda (worked with her in the past when I was a Real Estate Broker) and his Dad, Steve who I met for the first time a little over 10 years ago when I started tractor research and shopping.
I recommend you visit your surrounding tractor dealers and report back on the red carpet treatment they give you and even call several of them.
Reading for years isn't quite the same as doing and offering help to others, you know.
Any way in my opinion which you asked for and I didn't offer without your asking, I believe you'll do well participating on the TBN forum.:welcome: :welcome: :welcome:

First off, I live in Ky and buy in Ky (Barlows) and I'm not a farmer and I won't sign a slip of paper saying my purchase is for Agricultural use so I ALWAYS pay the 6% Ky state sales tax on the purchase price. If I buy from Barlows a $20000 Kubota I pay $1200 in Ky state sales tax........unless......I trade to Barlows a $15000 used Kubota and then I pay 6%/$300 on the difference. Always do and always have. This is one of the reasons I usually trade my old/used tractors to Barlows instead of selling it myself which can make a big difference in the actual dollar trade difference trading vs selling/buying.
I started my career with State Gvmnt as an Auditor in Frankfort. The Gvmnt doesn't always know or keep up with everything. If I found someone had "made a mistake" and hadn't paid something I sent them a bill. If I didn't find it then it was never found thus the bill was never sent. There are hundreds if not thousands of people buying tractors across the country and except for the lien filing there is usually no record of tractor buying/selling transactions. I pay myself because the seller and me live in Ky but if Barlows was in Tn and I bought for delivery here in Ky, I'd wait for a bill before paying.
Rarely has anyone posted that they have rec'd a bill from their state for their out of state tractor purchase, didn't say never, said rarely.

I was just making the general comment about people who say buying out of state is tax free (doesn't apply to you and Barlows). Most people probably will never get caught but that doesn't change the fact that a number of states require you to pay a use tax when you file your taxes on items that the seller didn't collect your states tax.

I will also attest to the fact that Brady is a real person and has always responded promptly to my phone calls or emails. I just exchanged emails with him a few weeks ago about another Kubota. My ZD323 came from a local dealership, but purchased my L3800 from Barlows. Much better price than I could do locally, and I did stop at quite a few different dealers. I did hear that Brady may have another side business going and may cause some delays or missed communications. I would highly recommend emailing him to get the quickest response. Hope you have better luck next time and welcome to TBN.
