No offense taken, 2lane... I understand where you're coming from.

Good point Greg. We all are coming from a different angle. We should be hesitant to judge another's angle and point of view. :)

So very true... In all aspects of life. Well said, Richard.

Can you say lake kittens? If thats too harsh, check around at different vets. If they won't do it for free I know there is a vet nearby here that does them cheap a couple times a year, like $5 cheap. I'm not sure if he uses a chain saw or what.

Eight plus years ago shortly after we bought our current place, we found three kittens in the barn. We put them in a cage to lore momma into a have-a-heart trap. When they were old enough, all four went to get spayed/nuetered. Somewhere along the line, we think someone dumped a tom as he was friendly. We had him nuetered too.

We do have plenty of coyote's around but still have all five whom for the most part keep other cats away. Two of those cats are pure white which I would think makes them easy pickin's but they hold their own.

One thing I have learned over the years about cats. If strays come around and you do not necessarily want them, either dispatch them asap or catch them asap no matter how wild and get them "fixed". Then, find a shelter that will take them knowing full well they will likely be killed or let them loose. Either they hang or scoot but either way, they won't reproduce.

The benefit of having them spayed or neutered is that you can release them (chase them away or drop them somewhere else) and they will help to keep the feral cat population down.

It's especially helpful if the toms have a vasectomy, instead of being castrated.

I don't think I am a warm and fuzzy guy, but I am not a wholesale butcher of friendly critters. That said, people's definitions and perceptions on this board are very different. To me, a barn is place to house livestock and their feed. Period. A couple cats at most is acceptable I suppose. Anything more is nuts. I gotta whacko neighbor down the road that has at least a dozen. That is not an exaggeration. Her husband and she are too CS to do anything about it. They have arab horses. The place smells like cat scat everywhere, right to the road and mailbox. You can see the cats anytime all over the place. It is irresponsible IMHO, and a tragedy for birds. You never see any birds around their place. ANY. Elimination and reduction are in order.

My fenced in barn is about 25' from a lonely road, folks in the city think it is perfect for their unwanted dogs and cats. The worst year was two years ago, we received 68 cats and dogs, I put cameras and lights up all around to deter folks. This year only 4 have been dropped off. Shelters do not want them and vets around here do nothing for free. I have turned a few into pets and found homes for a few, but the rest...

How you control is your personal choice, pick a method you can live with, but you need to control the population as any animal in poor condition suffers more than one not suffering at all.

I'm not going to beat around the bush, the hills in my pastures are filled with birdshot, buckshot, .22 etc. All from dogs chasing my horses and chickens. Best thing to do with the kittens is to grab them when they are still young, just old enough to ween and take them to the local sale barn in a box and mark them free in front of the door.

To expand on the aforementioned dog issue, First came a warning to the owner, then .410 rocksalt, then 410 birdshot, then came the rifle. Just because you can't keep your pets home doesn't mean my chickens should feed them or horses and cattle entertain them. By law I can walk up to the threshold of the neighbors house and shoot his dog if I have proof it is disturbing my livestock.

On another note, my aunt and uncle had a feline over population problem but they never lasted long thru the fall they would get under the hood of his truck. We'll just say a 3rd gen cummins still started with a couple cats in the belt where it's nice and cozy. Used to get prolly 3 a week that way.
