Barn door design

I don't really want a roll-up due to expense and loss of ceiling height when in the open position.

When I worked in an a large industrial building they had metal roll-up doors that actually rolled up into a roll at the top, so it ate up very little overhead space. I'm guessing these cost a pretty buck, but it would be interesting to check into. Here's an example of what I'm talking about.

Harv,
I've seen doors like this where the roll in on the outside so as to take up no room on the inside. There is a cover for the roll to protect it. Or you could build a small roof to hide it.

Hmm, that's what my shop door is and I figured it was probably cheaper than the other types. Of course, since it was there when I bought the place, I've never priced them. I'll have to admit I do like it better than the others.

I think they're cheaper and they you don't lose any headspace to speak of with them. On my new barn to build sliding doors for the stalls cost $280 by the time you figure the cost of the door, track, and sliders, compared to $190 for the rollup. On the bigger doors, 14x12 price was $322. When I ordered my barn they said rollups were the cheapest doors to go with by about 30%.

Mike:

At my web page (near the bottom) http://members.aol.com/wvbills/Construction.htm you will find a picture of the barn doors I built last year for my pole barn.

They are 6' w X 12' h. They're made of T1-11 exterior plywood on a 2 x 4 frame (inside). There is a 1 X 3 diagonal brace across the inside from the top-hinge side to the bottom. The bracing on the outside is 1 X 4 peices. I put three 8" T hinges on each door. They've been up a year and have not shown any sagging yet.

Great looking barn and doors! Thanks for sharing that with me. These guys have me leaning towards roll-up doors but yours proves that a hinged door is a viable alternative.

Will keep you posted,

Mike
