Barn door question....

Henro Had another idea. What if you went with the swinging doors so that both could be open at the same time BUT have a section on the bottom, say a foot and a half that was built in such a way that it slid up to clear anything in the way ie. snow and then you could clean everything with the tractor.

Bill. my barn has sliding door - one large one. But because I did not care to slide the door open (it is large and heavy) just to walk into the barn, I cut a regular door into the sliding door. So now, I can enter that door, which swings open, or slide the entire door open when I need to. You may want to consider that if it fits your circumstances.

One more thought, if you have the room on either side of the barn and if it would not interfere with other uses or get in the way, you could frame out a track for the sliding doors, or one of them, to slide out to the side of the barn on one or both sides. Basically you would be extending the track and framing to a post out away from the barn the same distance as the door is wide.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help. I am just getting around to visiting tbn as I had a ton of dirt/fill to move yesterday and that kept me pretty busy. I mean a lot, not a ton...actually was probably 100 tons... B2910 had a nice workout...

Now I need to digest what everyone said and come back with a couple more questions!

Have a great Sunday...hope you weather is as nice as ours is here in Pgh. today...

Henro,

I second the roll-up door (like they have on the steel buildings) I will be putting a 18' X 12' on in my garage at the new house (when we finally get started on it! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif)

You can get them in manual (chain hoisted) or automatic ( motor hoisted). They will cost more than the sliding or swinging but in a few years you will not regret the extra money spent for the convieniance and ease of use.

Just my $.02.

Henro,

In my opinion you are on the right track with the sliding doors. I'll attach some pictures of the front of my barn I built to show you what I did. Each opening is 8.5' clear and 9' tall. Rather than the double track I put one track on the outside and one on the inside (see pictures). In winter I have less problems getting the inside door to slide open (slide path protected). Even sliding doors can have problems in the winter if ice/snow builds up along the slide path of the door. Similar to a previous post I installed an access door on the inside sliding door. May not be exactly what you need but thought the pictures might help. Let me know if you have questions or would like more pictures.

Hi all,

I have been thinking...boy am I glad I asked the question. I would not have thougth of the rollup doors as a possibility in a million years! Thanks for suggesting it, cowboydoc.

The snow question is pushing me towards either the rollup or the sliding doors....sliding a little cheaper but can only use open one side at a time, or half of each side if I make four doors and buy extra hanging hardware.

Rollup would let me have full openings on both sides. I only need to close them in the winter anyway...so this rollup idea is appealing. I found one place on line that sells these roll up doors, but the max width is 12'...I don't see that as a problem...

Still not sure where this is heading, but I am inclined to like the roll up door idea...if it make sense dollar wise...and it looks like it might. Still, the roll up door will probably cost twice as much as a sliding door...

Anyone have a suggestion for roll up door sources? The one I have found so far is Trac-Rite...have to make up my mind in the next month or so...

just_toolin, thanks for posting those pictures. If I use sliding doors I was thinking of doing it the way you did, but then seeing I can get a double track to hang on the outside I figured that there would be no disadvantage to using the double track...

Still up in the air...
