I like grade 60 for any wall, the retaining wall I referred to in my earlier post was 12" thick

You should use grade 60 even though Lowes, Home Depot, etc usually carry grade 40.

If you are going to use a 3'-0" wide footing, I would thicken it up accoridingly - say 15" to 16" thick. 12" thick is usually good for 2'-0" wide footings.

Hi...

One support technique I've seen used on long concrete foundation walls... is having an additional wall at 90 degrees to it every so many feet (20' ?)... on the inside... like the end wall but not very wide... 2' in width maybe ? ...full height...

I understand this technique also allows the long wall to be thinner too... say like 8" thick instead of 10"... so it saves on concrete...

Maybe a professional can provide info. on this...

Don't forget that most of the force from the sandy backfill ( ahhh Cape Cod /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif ) is down. The force laterally is very limited especially due to the materials lack of water holding capacity. There is a angular diminishment of the force , but I can't recall sackly how it is figured. Once you're decked you'll be fine. I'd watch the backfill placement until the deck is set and tight. Maybe only place 1/2 the backfill, then deck, the finish.

I might add you probably will have to let the wall cure for some 28 days I believe, At least that's what I did and then waterproofed, backfilled with stone and of course drain lines.

The pilasters helped immensely as well.

"here on Cape Cod we need a full foundation for code"

Doesn't your county building dep't. have something to say about size/thickness of footings, and how much rebar/where in walls? I would think you would have to submit your drawings to them to be ok'ed/denied.

He could also use the fast setting concrete that obtains more of its strength more quickly. Can the concrete truck get close to the site or is it going to be pumped? My estimate is that it will take 20 yards of material for the wall 54'x9'8"x12". I believe that the wall should be vibrated to avoid any voids. Have you contacted the concrete company to see if they have a engineer on staff???? Also, if it were my project, I would want to wait till warmer weather to make this pour. I don't like putting calcium chloride into th concrete to inhibit freezing..
You haven't commented on the two 30' walls.... are you going to be putting any re-bar in them? Are they going to be poured at the same time as the 54' wall? If so, are you going to run the re-bar around the corner?? More questions than answers, but that is the way we will figure this out together... If so, then this well add an additional 22 yards (approx.) of concrete to this job.

Actually, each town has its own building inspector, and drawings get submitted to him. But typically the details of rebar in a foundation aren't something that gets studied. Since the code can't enumerate all the situations and the inspector is not an engineer, there is no way to review, short of requiring a drawing stamped by a licensed engineer. That's the case for timber frames but not for foundations. But not to worry, we have plenty of other regulations here to make up for it!

Just don't let them find any creature that someone claims is an endangered species, or you will be old and grey before that barn is built. I have read about how things like this can get out of hand on the Cape....

Good questions. We are planning to pump the concrete (because of limited access) and vibrate it. Have contacted the concrete company, but they focus on the mixture and not reinforcement. Will NOT use calcium chloride, but they do recommend another admixture that accelerates curing (not sure what it is).

The two 30' side walls will have the same rebar structure, and the bars will bend around the corner. See attached approach to this, which I believe follows convention at corners.

I'm also planning to have a conference with the concrete contractor and the ready-mix concrete supplier to get on the same page.
