Hey, everyone, sorry I haven't responded in a bit. I have finally settled on rough sawn pine from a local mill. I looked hard at a number of options, here is a summary:
1 - cedar - it looks great, but man, it is pricey. Would have cost me over $4k to side the barn. Yikes.
2 - Pine siding - surprisingly hard to find. Lowes could special order it and my favorite local lumber yard was the same way - "I can get it, but its not cheap and will take some time." I was really surprised that this was not more readily avaliable.
3 - rough sawn from a friends farm - My boss just cleared 40 acres and had plenty of timber he was willing to share, unfortunately, the only guy with a portable mill we could find was booked until December. My wife would kill me if I waited that long. Plus, too many complications since it is the boss.
4 - rough sawn "extras" - one mill had an option that I could come by and grap the scraps. THey are well priced, but are random widths and lengths.
5 - Rough Sawn Air Dried. I found a lumber yard that had the exact widths and lengths I needed. They had partially dried the lumber, then planed one edge. They had good advice and were the first folks to seem to know waht I needed and could deliver on my schedule. I decided to go with them. The delivery is scheduled for Friday, so we'll see if the material is as good as they said. It wasn't cheap, but its the look I want, the quality sounds right, and they were great to deal with. I also checked with a builder I know and he thinks they are great.
Thanks to everyone for the advices.
