Two top coats of Zinser Perma White is what I use... it is guaranteed against mold and mildew and has solve several problem areas on jobs that I had...

I use UGL system on my basement and garage with very good results. I cleaned the wall with broom and water. May have used some tsp, but can't recall. Concrete walls being concrete walls, I filled in some honeycomb and Then used the Dry-Loc Etch from Ugl. From there with a heavy nap roller I rolled the paint on. I also used the heavy bristle brushes to get into all the little holes that don't want to fill. Totally brightened up the place. Was cleaner and easier to clean. Good project, good product and good results...How often does that happen?:D

I used Sherwin Williams Super Paint 8 years ago, over old painted walls without a lot of preparation. Went on nice and easy and looks great and has held up perfectly.

I don't recommend painting unpainted walls though. And I usually don't recommend using the waterproof coatings unless the walls are very rough and porous. The waterproof coatings are heavier bodied and fill small voids better than regular paint. Does almost nothing to stop water problems.

Used UGL dry lock first, 2 coats. REALLY cut down on the dampness and gave me nice bright white walls.

I cannot speak positive of Dry-Lok. Useless for me after 4 applications over a short course of time.

I used dry loc on my block walls first and then was told I couldn't stucco over it. Instead, i should have stucco'd first and then used dry loc over the stucco. That''s what I was told at least. So keep that in mind if you decide you want to hide your block with a coat of cement.....

Along time ago I coated my basement with a coating that came in a 5 gal bucket, it was a dry powder and you mixed it with water and painted it on. I think the name of that type was called **** tight, and I haven't had any water issues from water seeping through the blocks. I remember it was hard to apply and took quite a long to time to put on. The last that we put on was also powder but I believe it was a different name and wasn't quite as good. If I ever have to do anymore coating of blocks I am going to try to find something already mixed and a little easier to apply, even if costs more. We had a study built for my wife and a basement under it for my mule and someone told my wife to use driveway sealer filler on the outside of the blocks to seal them. The drive way sealer filler went on easy enough but I haven't had it back filled yet so I don't know how well it will work to prevent dampness. I know one thing though the blocks looked nice if having a black foundation under your building would be okay. I mentioned painting one of my buildings completely with the driveway sealer but the wife don't think much of that idea. Has any of you used the driveway sealer that way, and is it possible to put some kind of tint in it to change the color a little?

I had a damp basement a few houses ago and I used the UGL Dry-loc oil-based paint on 2 walls and the water-based, low odor stuff on the other 2. Looked great for a couple months then the walls with the water-based stuff started discoloring as it was clearly obvious water was seeping through. The other walls were fine. It stinks but it works, at least in my case.

We don't have water problems other than condensation from those hot and humid days in the summer. The walls a painted a dark gray, why I don't know but they are. I know, like everything else now-a-days what is advertised is not really what you end up with. Whatever paint is on the walls now has held up very, very good. We are making a wood working section for the wife in one area of the basement and really need to be looking at a lighter colored wall. So maybe just a good breathable concrete paint is all we are looking for?

We dry locked it, along with running all gutters and downspouts the right way our basement is very nice now.

If you have water issues - no off the shelf paint will correct the prob. A couple of coats of the UGL or Zinsser will give a marginal safety net. I have used the UGL and topcated with a bright white gloss for cleanability in a few houses - no issues in the past 7 years. Be sure to mix the paint before and during to keep the solids in suspension.

No water issues other than condensation in humid weather.

Like I mentioned earlier, I usually steer people away from those waterproof paints. I've seen condensation increase on one customer's walls, she said she never had a problem before she had the walls "waterproofed"

Most basements do need a dehumidifier in summer months regardless of active leaks or not.

I have seen the same thing with an oil base paint and then the paint peels off. I was actually looking for a breathable primer and then indoor breathable paint. I am going with the Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer not sure on the paint yet.
