Thanks. Batteries give such long and good service yet it's always painful to have to buy them. Plus, one of the few things that has some value, even when expired.

EDIT: Looked up the Niagara Falls Location. Halfway to Buffalo from the border. A bit far in a 3/4 ton truck.

For the past 3 years, I've been getting them at Menards when the sales hit.

Not for a vehicle, but for livestock fence energizers. They have a 2 year free no-questions ask policy. Well, the batteries last a year in the frozen realm of winter. In the Spring, I just take that one in, they replace it FREE and I get another 2 year warranty. So, for 3 years, 3 new batteries. Only bought 1.

I do keep one or two old batteries around for exchange purposes. So, when needing a battery that has nothing to swap with, I grab from the shelf the old worn ones.

That's always the problem I run into when buying at Walmart or other consumer locations. "What's it going in?" Mule, stump grinder, pump, generator, welder, anything other than a car! So no warranty. Nice to buy from a sales person that has nothing to loose and not on commision, or worrried about the branches numbers..

Oddly, I never get asked that at Walmart or anywhere else. I never offer up what I'm using it for. I basically show up with the old battery in the cart, walk right in, and down the isles to automotive. Take the new battery and old one to the check-out. They take the money and the core-battery and I get the new one heading out the door. No questions asked. The cashier doesn't even look to see if the batteries are even the SAME group size or terminal type.

They ALWAYS seem to ask the application for warranty here. I always feel a little sheepish bringing in a lawn and garden battery for a core! They probably like it since it isn't so heavy.

I replied to this Thread in 9/17 and Can honestly say I'm still good on the battery in the Tractor. 12yrs.old next month that I've owned it.
Just checked it when I replaced the head light the other day. I expect to get another Yr. out of it. If I don't Hey!! I can't really complain. I'll probably go with a PeP Boys when or if it does go out.. I average about 5yrs a battery in my Truck so far. I'm on the 4th. which is a PeP Boys the 3rd. which was Replaced by them in just a little over 2yrs.. I've have over 3yrs. on the replacement and it seems really good. No complaints.
It just came up I believe by California about putting a good Chrg. on the battery before you use it. Done the tractor battery like that since I owned it. After setting and doing that it gives the battery the highest output it's capable of.

I have been making phone calls. I have settled on a GROUP 27(Starting) battery. I like that size. Now the fun begins and I have shifted my focus. I am looking at weight! Most are at 50 pounds and the Magnacharge is 40! Some are as high as 70. That in my mind is VERY revealing.

Group-24 is about 45-lbs

Group-27 is about 50-lbs

Group-31 is about 60-lbs

Typically, the heavier the battery due to the metal plates, the longer the AmpHour run time.

Gelcell variants will indeed weigh more over the quick start versions. I'm using one on my compact tractor for winter use in single digit minus temps.

Some of the Walmart lawn and garden batteries are so light, you might think, there is no lead in there. BUT they have not failed me either.

May go with a local independant dealer that sells Eastpen. Never heard of it. Group 27 starting, similar specs to everyone else and weighs 55 pounds. $139 CDN, in stock. Nice guy, knows what he is talking about. Called one distributer, asked for a group 27 and she wanted to know the (physical) size.

Wasn't sure of the Group of my Tractor battery was. So I googled it and found the Specs. on it. I'll be going out of my way to Lowes when I finally do have to replace it. Kind of made my day. Only half the Distance if that of how far I had to drive to return the Pep Boys. In the tractor They call it a Deka 60 Farm equipment. Reasonable on the price also.

Interstate was $25.00 more money for a similar Group 27 and that was supposed to be my account price although I rarely buy from them. She quoted another hundred bucks for suggested retail. PLEASE!

Kinda typical. I get ALL my batteries now from Central Battery, an old outfit here in Charlottesville, Va. They're so nice to work with.

For the tractor, I cannot jump it and drive it in to them, but that's what we do for all other batteries except for the stationary ones. They're replace them in various gizmos. No charge and generally lower price than what you can get them for uninstalled anywhere else. I don't bother with "anywhere else" now.

They do. But their prices are 20% more than Walmart, so that's not a deal in my book.

I have never been asked that at Walmart not advance. Just buy it and go??

Some of those 27 heavy ones may be deep cycle?

They were cheaper then Sam's Club with a year more warranty. Might not be the case with all options, just letting know of another option out there to look into.

Don't make the mistake I did several years ago. The clerk told me Autozone's marine starting/lighting battery was preferable for farm equipment that would be parked for months off-season. It only lasted a couple of years. I think it wasn't built tough enough for a tractor's jolts and vibration.
