My strong desire not to cripple or to kill a human being including myself drives my FSD interest.
Noble goals, but a lot the driving public is not that aware.

The easy/big attraction is many people just don't want to bother driving. Their base-level reasons may vary, but IMO, if they are that disinterested in driving, a well-tested autonomous system may be an improvement under "normal" road conditions.

I think it’s kinda sad if you are correct and the statistical majority wants autonomous driving.
Geeze, I thought it was sad that most kids today (and some adults) can’t drive a clutch
I'd like to be wrong.

Outside of rural Ag communities, IMO most adults can't drive stick now.

Thin-edge of wedge..... automatics, lane-keeping warning, blind-spot warning, self-parking vehicles, backup sensors including for trailers...... extrapolate that pattern just a bit..... many people are already sold on letting the tech take over.

I like simple solutions, but that is out of step with most manufacturing today. One example - I detest the glass greenhouse on many vehicles today, CUVs are mostly terrible, and many small cars have drifted off the same way. It's not hard to connect the tech taking over with less functional glass and mirror systems on those platforms. Many/most people don't seem to mind though.....

Robo taxis trend will be a driving force for FSD and a decrease in vehicle ownership. Affordable car ownership is not a reality for everyone going forward. Getting humans out from behind the steering wheel is going to save lives and dollars.

I expect you will be in luck soon.

For me our 2016 Nissan Leaf SL with the 2020 150 mile range battery works well for the two 30 mile daily trips in a technical and financial sense. My dream is an EV that I can get in and out of that has Full Self Driving. Tesla is the only option but in 4-5 years that may change.
With all due respect, Tesla is not self-driving. Owners have been charged for this feature and it is not fully implemented. Tesla critics have claimed fraud however I an not aware of any lawsuits regarding this

Yes there is a huge difference between self driving and full self driving. Tesla is the closest to FSD that I see today.

We have drivers today that did not learn how to drift on a gravel road.

I agree that self driving cars will save lives in the long run. However, I haven't seen anything that ever saves dollars when it comes to automobiles.

Oaktree what evidence do you offer that "traditional" automakers know how to an EV that will last 15+ years ?
I never said they know how to make an EV that lasts 15 years, what I said was that they knew how to make vehicles that last that long or longer.
I have seen a number of first hand reports with Tesla's "quality". It seems like they have the best software and features on the market, but the quality and fit/finish just isn't there yet. Seams not lining up, mirrors not properly attached to a vehicle, interior panels not aligned, etc. I haven't see that in a GM, Ford, etc vehicle in a very long time. Perhaps this is what he is referring to.

That is exactly what I was referring to.
I'm not even convinced that Tesla has the best features. They certainly don't seem to "get" ergonomics. Having every single operator function besides steering dependent on menus on a touchscreen doesn't make it in my book. Have their design engineers actually ever driven on a real road?

It’s the blending of a car and a laptop

I'm fairly certain I'd fall asleep with a self driving system.
Don't worry, you can program its alarm clock to wake you up when it gets you to your destination. Plus it is better to go in your sleep if it gets you in an accident
