The Fuel Tank of Tomorrow - A Super Capacitor? - YouTube

If the super cap battery becomes a reality it could be a game changer for EV adoption. A 30 second recharge time would overcome the problem of recharging time today.

This guy talks fast but I heard about this move by Tesla back before I decided to by our first EV but did not know enough to pay attention to its potential for powering EV's.
Because of self discharge super capacitors are not practical for primary storage.... However, they are a fantastic supplemental storage particularly for regen from breaking.

I got 2/3rds thought the video and had enough. Slick talker avoided the issues. The key problem with energy storage in capacitors is self-discharge. Means you have to use a fair amount of power to keep the capacitor charged. Its the same sort of thing as "all that gasoline wasted in inefficient waste heat."

Capacitors are great in that there is no chemical reaction to age. The issue with chemical reactions is that they don't perfectly go forward and backward to where they were, which ultimately limits cycle life with decreasing capacity.

Do you have any concept as to how much current a 30 second charge would require? Lets say an interesting 100kWh battery at 1000V? At 100% efficiency: 12,000A. Or 24,000A if only 500V. A 10kV battery would only require 1,200A! And all this time I marvel at how Tesla lets untrained unlicensed idiots make 120kW (400V 300A) connections to their vehicles.

Now lets consider the 30 second charge is 99% efficient. That means there will be 1kWh of heat, in 30 seconds. Imagine a common electric space heater, those are 1kW to 1.5kW. Now consider an hour of heat but in only 30 seconds. 120 times greater. Not good news.

Observe our slick talker claimed his supercapacitor could discharge from full to zero in 1 second, and claimed this to be a safety future. Lithium technology is much slower than that, but still fast enough to be banned from airlines.

I'm entirely ignorant on the voltages and electrical systems of today's mainstream EVs...

But I do know that the state of the art (production) golf carts made by Textron ...: RXV series are powered by 48V DC battery packs (L/A or Li ion)...But the power to the motor via the controller is 3 phase AC current...

BTW there are no physical brakes on any of the wheels...all braking is regen...

Our Leaf battery is basically 400 DC volts and the motor is 3 phase AC like in the golf cart you mentioned. It has conventional brakes but often I never have to use them very much. Well I do tap the brakes to take off the cruise control or to just let anyone behind me understanding I am slowing down since regen does not trigger the brake lights. I think the law on that in the USA may have changed in 2018. When the battery is hot or about out off charge the regen can really slow down the car very fast due to the high charge rate of regen.

EV transmissions puzzled me at first. Yes there is one EV with a two speed transmission but that is not the norm at this time.

As you can see in the video below by a guy working to replace the gas engine in a Porsche 911 with one out of a Nissan Leaf EV that the Leaf gear box is nothing more than a reduction gear. I think it is like a 9:1 reduction gear. A Leaf doing the max speed of 94 MPH the motor is turning about 10,000 RPM which would be too fast for the tires. :)

There is no forward and reverse gears because the motor rotation provides that feature.

It uses less than two quarts of ATF and that is the only lube in the drive line. EV's are easy to build and maintain because of so few moving parts.

I just found this and I do not know if he ever got the 911 electrified.

The Tesla Roadster 1.0 came with an unreliable 2-speed transmission. They had so much trouble Tesla rushed to design a 1-speed replacement and retrofitted all cars when asked.

The Model S has about 9.5:1 reduction between motor and wheels. Top speed over 140 MPH.

With more EV's on the road, how will the federal excise tax be assigned to them? In Wyoming its 24 cents a gallon for gasoline and diesel.

That's a valid question, and you aren't the first person to ask it. There are already discussions about raising the gas tax in this state, as we aren't raising enough to keep up with the road maintenance.

I would sure like to know where these "Well Educated" products of our school system are. What a waste of money. More like, 12 years of baby sitting.
