That is true for every EV that has been sold in the world if one factors in develop, building and marketing cost. The only new car I ever owned was a 1973 Datsun 1200 bought in Murray KY so Nissan has had access to the USA ICE vehicle since the late 1960's.

Deereandbuick check out a fresh update about Tesla to help you post from a more EV informed position.

Check the regulations of how many EV’s manufactures have to sell in California to be able to sell ICE vehicles without being hit with very high taxes and fees .
Not the only market that requires a minimum ratio or volume of EV’s .

But they have known about those regulations for years but Elon Musk as an immigrant apparently chose to do business within the rules of the USA. The big boys are paying major bucks to Tesla because Tesla was rewarded with avoid very high taxes and fee chits and now he selling them for million to the lazy companies. That is money they need to start learning how to design profitable EV's but no instead they are giving millions if not billion because they let down their stock holders by playing golf for the past 15 instead of working their tails off like the immigrant has done and still is doing.

Because the immigrant was reading and following the rules he is now a role model. When to old line goof off companies beg yet again to government for help they are without excuse. The governments of the world will just point to Elon Musk and say if the immigrant that showed up as a teenager with $2000.00 is doing it just stop lying and go follow the leadership of the immigrant that is meeting our regulations.

Still leaves an artificial market that would not exist without legislation, fee, fines, taxes and tax payer funded subsidies . All for a token effort which make zero difference to world CO2 levels .
CO2 is plant food so no problem.
Of all the greenhouse gasses combined CO2 makes up less than 0.2% . Why go hysterical over CO2 unless you want to scare the peasants into submission and make a fortune .

But you are not living in the real world of today like some makers of ICE are not. In the real world today there are goals to reduce CO2 and costs associated with meeting those goals and fines for not meeting these goals. Who do you see making a fortune out of all this besides Al Gore?

Toyota recently put in print their hybrids will not be enough to meet CO2 objectives and that EV's will be needed to save the company. Tesla was putting serious money it this game starting back in 2003. GM started 20 years earlier and look where they are today value wise compared to VW and Tesla the two leading EV players of today. Does GM have the leading EV battery technology and factories today or not?

Most car maker CEO's just talk. Elon Musk is different in that he talks a lot but does even more to act on his talk than other CEO's. How many car CEO's names to you know off of the top of your head besides Elon Musk? Ford and GM could not combine then do a stock swap to buy Tesla today.

To keep this subject simple I think just looking at the auto maker with the best in-house EV power source is most likely to win long term. The EV power source is like the ICE of yesterday. When Henry Ford came out with the V-8 in 1932 it took GM and the others guys like 20 years to do the same.

I expect battery technology of today will NOT be cutting it down the road. Do you think Elon Musk is married to lithium batteries forever? Look at non lithium battery investments he is making.

Today people are not buying Tesla stock because they think Elon Musk is on the road to failure. They want to get on his rocket ship to the future. Will they be right or wrong?

Tesla vs Detroit is similar to Amazon vs Sears & Roebuck.

Vision and innovation leading to a more profitable future. Versus - in the case of the automakers - so much inbred inertia that all the automakers can think of in response is relying on their lobbyists to write legislation protecting their status quo.

Buying Tesla stock is tempting. The question is whether it really can grow profitability fast enough to justify today's insane price.

Up until last week's earnings report I thought its future was a random guess, now I'm beginning to think it might be real. I like Musk's vision for the future but whether he can turn that into profit is still not settled.

I made a little money on similar wild-guess stocks in the late 90's before they all fell back to realistic levels. But I'm still driving the car that those profits bought, I haven't seen an equally obvious opportunity since. Until Tesla .... ???

You guys who bought Tesla early, congratulations.

Innovation does not over come the tech limits of Lithium Ion cost, energy density , weight, short range and slow charge rate . EV's are up the slope and past the knee onto the plateau of the technical plain.
