Growing up in coal mine country, never saw what you described. Course our mines were deep mines. 1 county north was strip mined. If I drive you thru the area you would never know it unless you were told.

There are significant deposits of cobalt and many rare earth elements in the sea floor...The US has been sitting on it's hands while other nations are not only mining but developing more environmental friendly and more productive methods of sea floor mining...The US needs to get off its butt and get with the program...and stop dreaming about mining in outer space...

I asked the UPS driver the other day if they had any electric delivery vans yet. He said he heard that had some or they were on order but they semis that ran on natural gas. The link below states how they are using CNG.
