Inherited a Massey 283. Been sitting in barn for several months without being used. Would not crank. Jumped it off and let it run for 30 min. Killed it and it would not crank. Took battery in and had it tested. Said it was "weak" but still good. Charged it all day. Still would not crank tractor. Would turn it over a few times and then not at all. Bought brand new battery. Cranked it first time but later would not crank it. Was told it might be my battery cables. Went to a local specialty store and had them make me hot and ground cables. Replaced old cables. Made very little difference if any. Will turn motor over a few times and tractor will crank unless its first thing in the morning.

Could my starter be bad, or are starters "all or nothing" Any and all advice is welcomed. thanks. Mike

Starter could be bad. Sound like the spring in it is bent or broken. Its about $50 to get it changed. Bring it to your local auto electric shop and they should be able to rebuild it.
