Tractor
4300 John Deere 2000 Model
I own a JD 4300 with 40 hours on the clock. This tractor was built in August 2000. I was doing some routine maintenance today when I noticed quite a bit of corrosion on the oil cooler and in the battery compartment. It appears that the battery has been getting hot and boiling over. At the present time, the damage doesn't look too major. Should I use a baking soda/water mixture to neutralize the metal and change to a maintenance free battery? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thx
Rick

My dealer replaced my cooler no charge but wouldnt cough up a mnt.free batt.Your rite, put one on yourself .Its worth it to me.Baking sode works just fine for clean up ,also many spray cleaners out there.

Seems to me I remember seeing an insulating blanket for batteries somewhere. Maybe the JC Whitney catalog?

Use the Felt washers on the terminals and the battery mat (used to be carried by Harbor Freight but JC Whitney has em' Stock # 13JE2361R) I have one on everything and they really do work.

Same problem here. I took the battery out, washed it all down, sanded and repainted the sheet metal. I've been keeping an eye on it and now see that I should have cleaned and painted the underside of the sheetmetal that the battery sits on cause it's still corroding. By the way, Krylon semi gloss black matches what Deere uses.

I also have a 4300 that has the same battery problem. Talked to the dealer who would only offer a like battery.I put in a Delco Freedom battery after cleaning and painting. So far after bouncing around mowing pastures and rototilling and 4 months later all I find on the battery and compartment is dust!

John Deere has a service bulletin out to fix the acid coming out of the battery. On my 4400 the dealer install a different battery cap with a drain hose that drains out under the tractor. It was covered under warranty.
