Hello!

I just acquired a John Deere B (family heirloom) that has been restored and kept up-to-date. After transferring it home, we did maintenance checks (oil, filter, etc.) and found that the battery doesn't seem to be working very well. The battery is a 5V unit and there was question that it should be a 10V unit - can anyone confirm? I thought about buying a new battery - replacing the one that was in there - but wanted to know if was supposed to be a 5V unit.

We are also in the process of determining the SN/Year - someone painted over the tag and the stamp is filled with green paint (nice color, but we'll need to use a paint remover to get to the original SN). We think this is a '51 model.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Got my answer. It's a 5V (unless you change out parts), it puts + to ground, and although they did at one time make 7.5V batteries you should stick with th 5V.

A pic or two would be great, and would like to see it.

That 5v was a new one to me.

Same here, never heard of a 5V industrial battery. I have used 6 volts, 12 volt and even an 8 volt once to increase the starter capacity on a 12 volt system (one 8 and one 6).

There's no such thing as a 5 or 7.5 volt battery for a automobile or tractor. Each cell(cap) on a lead/acid battery contains 2 volts so if it has 3 cells as your tractor should then it requires a 6 volt battery. Below is a serial chart so you can determine yr model of your B if it has a serial number tag.

lead acid batteries run 2.1 volts per cell, I agree with Jim most likely to be a 6 volt battery. A modern day 6 volt battery will blow away the batteries from the 1950's. Batteries have improved quite a bit over the years. Never heard of a 5v 7.5 or 10 volt lead acid battery either.

A BCI Group 1 battery will fit the box, be 6 volt nominal voltage, and a fresh one is all you need to roll your B over.

Sorry. I have been away. You were correct it was a missed type. It is a 6 V battery. It goes under the seat and fits snugly into the area where the battery is to go.

Thanks!
