Which is best - I currently have both. I haven't gotten o try the BCS out yet because I bought it with a gear out. I hear the Gravelys are better brush hogs and snow pushers. The BCS is the best tiller on the market I hear. Anyone have any experience with either.

Both are excellent machines and each is "best" in its own way.

I have a BCS and an older Troybilt tiller. I actually like the Troybilt better for tilling but the BCS is more refined. I don't have a brush hog attachment, I found getting a used DR Field and Brush mower was cheaper.

The old Gravely tractors are beasts. They excel where solid ballast weight is needed. But they can wear you out if you try to man-handle them. The BCS is a much more nimble tool, and lighter all the way around.

I need to rebuild both of my gravley engines.

Overall it is pretty easy to get Gravely parts. Just rebuilt a Kohler powered machine from end to end and never had any issues with parts. Even the much older machines are not bad, try Richards in Spencer wv as he has more stuff than anyone and knows the machines inside and out

Thanks - I'll try them. I've been talking to Berlin Gravely in Ohio about parts also. Thanks Matt

Hi .For mowing or snowblowing Gravely are a lot better than any BCS or Grillo Because Gravely PTO are LIVE and with two speeds one for each gear.
Transmission with planetary and bands as automatic give a true shuttle you can go front and reverse with no clutch. You can go in first gear then go in second with no clutch and no stop.

BCS and Grillo are a lot better for gardening. more speeds adjustable wheels handlebar can move on side. And now are more versatile because more implements and parts available.
Good Luck Oldmech mowerd.jpg

Heres my Gravely 522 that I'm going to overhaul the engine. I ordered the engine kit on ebay last week.

Heres the 5260 I've been using this winter to plow snow with. I need to overhaul the engine on it also both machines only have 75 lbs of engine compression.

I've owned both machines as well, a newer gravely would probably be my ultimate machine, but this old L8 I have is pretty decent... I liked the steering brakes on the BCS, and the BCS was lighter to use... I liked the way the bush hog was built on the BCS with swing away blades like a real bush hog. Using the Gravely though, I can tell it is a much more robust machine, it's been around for over 50 years and is still working like a champ. The Tiller on the BCS wouldn't even be fair to compare to the tiller on a gravely, lets just say that based on tiller attachment alone, bcs would win hands down... BUT, bring out the rotary plow, and I go back to liking the gravely more because of its weight. Honestly though, I prefer my old troy bilt 4 speed horse for just tilling/cultivating although there are very few times that the ultra slow speed of the BCS came in handy, it was rare enough that I don't miss it... My biggest complaint about the bcs as opposed to the gravely though was cost to maintain, and cost/availability of attachments... Finding BCS attachments floating around for sale by themselves seems harder to do than finding old gravely implements... BUT, I suspect that will eventually change as they get older and more of them break beyond repair... I like the honda engine on a BCS (had an ACME too, parts were a nightmare), but you can repower a gravely with a big honda (not exactly cheap, but would be worth it)...

so, all in all, when the engine conks out on my L8, if I haven't replaced it with a more modern gravely with steering axles by then, I'll be putting a honda engine on it and in my opinion will be a truly top notch machine... However, I mainly use mine for only bush hogging in areas my tractor can't/shouldn't go... I thought about a DR mower, but kept having nightmares of when I first started the farm and used lighter duty equipment and broke it constantly...
