Actually, from what I understand, Kids do choose their parents.

My father and the rest of his immediate family got to take the shots a long time ago (when they were more painful than today's regime) after messing with a calf that when examined was found to have rabies. He said the shots were many and very painful. The shots were successful, and none of the family members came down with the dread disease. But I have always been careful with the disease and taken no chances.

I was chased by a rabid skunk when i was 14 with me looking over my shoulder and firing a .357 magnum revolver at it. I missed 5 of the 6 shots, but finally connected on the last one. If you think I wasn't frightened, you would be wrong, I told my father and we went back to douse the carcass in gasoline and burned it to ashes. I also remember a possum in a neighbors field chasing its tail over and over observed by me and my father. He said, "you go get the rifle, and I will get the gasoline and matches". Another barbecue. I have never taken any chances with a rabid animal. I will never forget that skunk.

For me it was the worst looking racoon coming after me like a mad dog... normally they are plump and with beautiful coats... this one was a nightmare... only time I've been afraid coming across an animal...

Get the shot.
Ask what the price will be beforehand, or ask your county health department if they offer them.

In America it's "give me your money or your life" in the immoral health care business. They will charge what ever they feel like they can get away with. A seeing how you might die if you don't get the shot, they can get away with a lot.
This lady got 1 rabies shot, the bill was: $48,512.

On the horrible side of the subject, this poor little guy didn't make it. His parents took internet advice and washed his hands after they thought he got scratched by the bat. He got bit, but they couldn't tell. I feel bad for the parents. I'll feel bad for the O.P., too, if he's wrong.

Florida Boy, 6, Dies After Being Bitten by Rabies-Infested Bat | PEOPLE.com

So so sad. And so so preventable.

There might be a lot of diseases you can play around with, ignore and hope for the best.

Rabies ain't one of them.

Bit by a coon = get the shots right now, period, end stop, do not pass go.

No, they shouldn't. They thought they were doing the right thing according to what they read and what they were told. They didn't know any better, and the loss of a child is probably more than a lot of people can bear.

Do a internet search on what you should do if your scratched by a bat...

Hmm... here is a dumb question, if the bat was in a bucket, why didn't it fly out? Or, if the bucket had a cover on it and the boy opened the cover, why didn't the bat fly out then?

When you tell a 6 year NOT to touch a bucket on the porch and you know a bat is in the bucket, what do you think is going to happen?

I have two stories that are related...
My grandfather told me his brother had to get the shots and it was very painful...
He was born in 1910 and his brother Ivy was exposed...
I am not sure the exact year or time...
Back 40 years ago or so I witnessed a racoon in the middle of the day sauntering across the front yard of our house...
At my youthful age I knew he was rabid...
I was driving the car up from my grandparents house and proceeded to go into the house knowing that a rabid racoon was in the front yard...
I told mom to get me the shotgun...
When I came out on the poor creature was walking across the porch...
I just froze at the door while he walked across the car port and then out the driveway into the field...
The shotgun dispatched him...
Put on gloves and buried the critter...

Rare but deadly...
That is rabies...
The county would offer rabies shots to all dogs and cats in our area back in the 60's when I was attending grade school...
You really didn't think that much about it at the time but it was just something that we did since all our dogs and cats were on the farm...

Good advise on here...
I would personally not take any chances with it and get the shots...

We've had the unfortunate experience of having bats in our house multiple times over the past 20+ years. It's a very old house with balloon construction, so the walls are open from basement to attic. We keep trying to plug things up, but if there's a hole that even the size of a dime, a bat can get in. Basically, if you ever had a mouse in your house, a bat is similar in size. We keep a butterfly net by the back door because it happens so often. I can usually get them on the 2nd swipe. We put them in a rubbermaid tub, bucket, whatever is handy with a lid and surprisingly, they just sit there. Especially if the lights are on. They just sit there. We then take them to the humane society for testing. They send them to a local vet that is located near the airport/bus station. That vet is the one that euthanizes the bat, packs it in dry ice, puts it on a Greyhound bus for Indianapolis, where the state bat lab picks it up for testing for rabies. Fortunately, they all have tested negative for rabies. So there you go. Probably 8-10 healthy bats. No rabies. Sitting in a bucket. Not trying to fly out.

So I got to thinking about why the bats don't fly up out of the bucket and did a quick search. Turns out that most bats can't take off vertically. They need to climb up something and drop a couple feet to get into flight. Since they can't climb the sides of the buckets or containers I put them in, I guess that explains why they don't try and take off if I open the lid. Didn't know that. Learned something new today. :confused3:
