Here in the UP of MI, the bat population had really fallen off due to that white nose virus that showed up here a few years ago. They say 10% have resistance to it but since they reproduce so slowly, it will take a long time for there number to recover.

One of our children is a biology major and been involved with bat research, capturing bats in places around the state, inspecting the captured bats for general health, etc..... The researcher heading the project is tagging the rarer species with transmitters, following them back to their colonies and looking for white nose. Pretty interesting. Going to central America to do more bat research over spring break.

So I got to thinking about why the bats don't fly up out of the bucket and did a quick search. Turns out that most bats can't take off vertically. They need to climb up something and drop a couple feet to get into flight. Since they can't climb the sides of the buckets or containers I put them in, I guess that explains why they don't try and take off if I open the lid. Didn't know that. Learned something new today. :confused3:

Hey, any day you can learn something new is a good day!. Tnx.

Yesterday I learned not to shake a jar of crushed dried hot peppers, then snif it.

Also:
Learning to wash your hands BEFORE using the bathroom after handling crushed red peppers is a lesson you only need to learn once!!

I remember being in a former girlfriend's garden with her and her grandma. They had Hungarian sweet peppers. I said "Oh I love those!" picked one off the plant, snapped it in half and bit it. It was not a Hungarian sweet pepper. It was a Hungarian hot pepper. So now my mouth is on fire and my eyes are watering. So I wipe the tears from my eyes with my finger.... that had hot pepper juice on it!

Learned something new as well.

That said, if I saw a bat sitting in a bucket during the daylight and not trying to fly out, I'd assume it had rabies. Dead bat to get checked out.

To put a live bat in a bucket in the presence of a 6 year old when you leave that bat unattended is beyond comprehension in my book.

That is pretty dumb.. Tells a 6 years old not to mess with at bat in a bucket and then left it unattended, not to bright..

Thank you.

The poor kid had little chance with those parents...

Put a knife on a porch and tell a 6 year old he can't touch it, BUT leave the knife unattended. What are the odds that the 6 year old is going to make certain no one is watching AND play with the knife?

They have made movie clips of kids in day school being told if they see a gun not to pick it up, ever. Go back a couple days later and have some one leave a gun laying out and about 60 seconds some kid will pick it up and all start playing with it.

I saw an interesting coffee table toy for adults. I works like this. About a 3 inch plastic cube with a large red button on top. Also on top is the words, Under no circumstances ever press this button, or something similair. It doesn't say why, just DON'T do it!. So you leave this out on your coffee table in the presence of the ADULT guest and leave them alone in the room.

Inside the box is a rather loud buzzer, a battery, a relay with the second set of contacts wired as a latching relay, so once the relay is actuated by the momentary pushbutton on the top, the relay latches up and holds its own coil energized, and well as switching on the rather loud annoying buzzer. Also inside is a magnetic reed switch in the normally closed configuration in series with the relay contacts/battery/buzzer combination.

So the moral of the story is: Not many ADULTS can resist the urge to press the stupid red button that says "don't press this". Humans are more like 'toons* than they care to admit. "shave and a haircut---SIX BITS!... Yep most people will press that button and fumble with it for some time trying to figure out how to make the buzzer shut up. And the only way to do it is to pass a magnet near the correct spot of the magnetic reed switch to let that relay coil drop out and reset for the next idiot. Hours of fun, one idiot at a time. So if ADULTS cannot resist the "bat in a bucket" how can you expect a 6 year old to do so?

*toons as in the movie Roger Rabbit.
