Rodney,
Personally, I'd go the the local shelter and get a used
dog. They are can be had already housebroken, already knowing
a few commands, already known to be good with kids and big
enough to not always be stepping on them all the time etc. They
also usually come with their 50 hour service (read fixed and with
up to date shots.) That will save you quite a bit of money. Also
most dog problems show up in the first couple years and a used dog
is past those heartbreaking experiences.
Mainly though, if you adopt an adult dog, you can determine his temperment
and attitudes before you decide. A puppy can grow into about anything.
Dogs, even within breeds, can vary quite a bit.
But best of all, the dog you adopt will not be killed.
And don't be fooled by this "But I want to bond with them when they
are a puppy" stuff. It just ain't true. A dog will bond to you as though you had
him since he was a puppy in less than two weeks. Usually it only takes 3
to 5 days. Mature dogs are the best. For a beagle, about 3 or so.
Oh, and beagle rescue often has puppies too, if your heart's set on it.
