I figured it wasn't food until the end. Felt kinda bad for the momma doe, and we have had a huge decline in deer since the coyotes have become such a problem. From all of my experiences with different black bears over the years they are very curious but very weary of humans. I'm not saying every one should run out and give teddy a big hug. Just saying I don't have the fear of them that most do, I do have a respect though. I'd also suggest if someone is afraid of an animal then it's best to stay away, animals can read humans like books. The bear won it's meal fair and that is the law of nature, I just wouldn't have felt right if I didn't atleast try to help that doe.

Bears certainly take many fawns however, my bet is coyotes take a lot more. Since coyotes have become more numerous within the past few years, we have noticed a reduction in the deer herd. Several years ago a hunter in Maryland could legally take 30+ deer by hunting in all seasons. I'm attaching a pic showing how we manage coyotes in my area. These are Eastern coyotes, much larger than the Western, Walt Disney coyotes. Around here they are pack animals and I would not want to be faced with a pack thus the Judge pistol in the over the shoulder holster. coyotes.jpg

Although we all tend to agree that Nature will be Nature, you showed true integrity by attempting to prevent more harm. I commend you for your display of compassion.

I am sure a bear saw it as food right away and not till the end....Being a black bear chances are it was not too big of deal depending on it's size

This one wasn't all that big high 200 to low 300lbs. When I was building my house I had one that went close to 500lbs come in and sit with me for a spell. I figure this one was probably a female we've had one hanging around with 2 cubs. You are correct the bear did see this as dinner, and it won it's meal . I would still do the same thing again though.

The eastern coyote is not a pure blood that's why they are bigger, around twice the size. Our coyotes breed with wolves many moons back which inturn gave a new breed. Around here they also travel in packs for the most part, nasty critters in my opinion.
