The only species of bears still existing in California is the common "black bear." The last know "California grizzly bear" was killed just after the turn of the last century in southern California.

One interesting tidbit about the California grizzly is that it was bigger than the Alaskan Brown Bears. It had the salmon for protein and growth, and the mild winters to stay healthy.

One of the things the Fish and Game learned many years ago with problem bears was that relocating them doesn't solve anything. Bears traped in Yosemite and released in the Yollo Bolly's would find there way back in a year or two, or get killed trying.

For awhile, they would say they were relocating the animals, but didn't actually do it. It is cheaper, easier and more effective to just kill the problem animals once they reach that classification.

Your bear under the cabin sounds like it falls into that category. If you get it to leave, it will come back for the rest of it's life. There really isn't any other alternative to dealing with an animal that has learned food can be found inside buildings.

The Fish and Game doesn't give out depredation permits lightly. They have every wacky environmentalist group breathing down their necks to justify each and every one they do give out.

They are also not equiped to kill the animals themselves, unless it becomes a self defense issue. Most problem animals are contracted out for elimination through trappers and licensed houndsman.

It might be easier if you look at it more along the lines of a very large varmit that has made a home under the house.

Good luck,

Why not locate someone that will remove the bear, give it to a zoo, or other wildlife sanctuary that will take care of it. Of course the nuisance must be removed, but consider less lethal, less painful, and more constructive ways to take care of the animal.

I would consider it cool, but then my favorite cat is cougar, and my second favorite is Siberian Tiger.

You're absolutely correct, if one of my neighbors was sleeping under my house, he'd be a gonner for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

only in Cali. I hope someone took care of the problem bear by now.

If it were me with a bear under my cabin (that had broke in and ate stuff) it would have "dissapeared" not to be seen again (except at dinner) before anyone could blink.

on the other hand if it had not broken in and made a nuisance out of itself, It would surely be welcome to stay. However once that cute little bear, has learned where the food is, there isn't too much that is going to persuade it (other than a 30-06) not to break in and have a buffet again and again

"only in Cali. I hope someone took care of the problem bear by now."

Not sure what you mean by only in Cali. If that implies you need a permit to kill wild animals particularly out of season, then yes. I doubt that type of control exists only in California.

The bear was shot and dragged out. Unfortunately, it had two cubs that were also destroyed. I don't know the answer to these things, I wish it could have been done differently.

That was too bad about the cubs. Murphy's law it was a momma bear.

_RaT_, I have only one question, did you use a politician or a M-I-L to distract the bear while you went to fetch the gun?

I can think of certain politicians I would not mind seeing used as bait. We have a senator here and I know of one in Mass. that would probably work well.
