Bearing buddy or old fashioned grease packing

/ Bearing buddy or old fashioned grease packing #21
On most of my cars, the need disappeared with front wheel drive.

The front bearings are lubed with the CV joints, but I lube the rears.

Actually this is not correct. The outboard hub of the outer CV joint protrudes thru the wheel bearing on front wheel drive cars. Earlier ones were re-packable [my 80 Honda Civic was] but most now have sealed bearings that bolt to the spindle and are replaced as a unit. The one we replaced on our grand am contained the sensor for the ABS and the flange w/ the wheel studs [floating brake disks]. Both types are divorced from the lube inside the outer joint.

Might try a tool like this or this.

I've used the second type with good success and it accommodates pretty much all bearing sizes.

Gary, I own both and your first one is a little faster to use. I grease wagon and tractor wheel bearings on my Dad's farm every harvest season. It is common to do 8 to 24 bearings on his equipment each year. Actually, I was using the 2nd style until my buddy told me about the 1st style(plastic plunger) and I like it better. It still is a messy job, but necessary. That's my 2 cents.
