Beaver has killed at least 8-Trees in a few weeks

About 4 years ago I noticed the stream running through our farm was dammed up. I'm 59 years old and have never dealt with beavers before. Fortunately I have a friend who traps the varmints. He got 3. Big buggers. I guess around here they don't have any natural predators except for a stray coyote? My friend trapped them for the fur.

I have one culprit in my study. LOL.

I'm just very fortunate here. Within a mile radius of my lake there is only one tree they like. The weeping willow we planted on this end of the lake. Otherwise, it's back to the cattail roots, for breakfast, for them. Everything else is gigantic ancient Ponderosa pines. If I still had my apple orchard - most likely that would have been a target for them. I pulled the last old trees and chipped them this summer.

That's sad, riptides. Beavers can do wonderful things. They can, also, become one H**L of a nuisance.

Sad? I honor him every time I look at him. My department of transportation, HOA and neighbors also benefit from them being elsewhere.

Update -

A week ago my wife and I placed welded wire fencing around some of the undamaged trees and so far we have not seen anymore damage even on the unprotected trees. Could be they moved on or maybe they are just full. Still haven't bought a trap, quality live cage traps are not cheap and as I said earlier I don't other critters to pay for the Dam ;) Beavers bad behavior.

Having to deal with beavers over the years, I'd like to tell Beltzington that we feel for him. Its a terrible situation when they go a cutting your favorite trees. You got to do something!

Arlyn, hard to image that everyone doesn't have to deal with them at some point... A

Like most all things in Nature - beavers can not be reasoned with. For Beltzington - I would paint my trees with sand laced latex paint, wrap them with welded mesh wire and either start trapping or get a night vision scope on my rifle. It's that or loose everything. When it comes to your valuable trees - the beavers loose, hands down.

The sad thing - there is SOMETHING that attracts them to your location. A lake, pond, stream and a food supply. If you eliminate these beavers - be on your guard for new ones.

Well it has been almost a month and no more sign of any beaver activity. I put a game camera at various locations and only saw a few small deer, a Blue Heron and to my surprise an alligator snapping turtle.

Not sure where they came from or why they left but they killed almost all the trees we had left for shade and appearance. I'll be wrapping any future trees with wire mesh.

Probably moved along looking for food.

Beaver eat the bark on softwood trees/brush. Hardwood trees are safe. People can easily learn to live with beavers in the area. Beavers can be a problem , most of the time if a person understands them the problem can be corrected. If you insist on fighting the beaver, perhaps you should look in the mirror and consider who was here 1st. Perhaps you should move back to the city where you will feel more to home.
