I just paid to have him moved 3 weeks ago... and was guaranteed that he didn't come back. There are so many swimming around here that just like woodchucks, if there's an empty home it's going to get filled. Actually the person who told me the beaver had come back was mistaken. I was there today and the house is empty.

Around here the Game Dept has identified drainage systems where beavers will do no damage. Trapped beavers will be moved to these areas. It could be up to 50 to 75 miles from where they were trapped.

I still maintain wrapping with hardware mesh/cloth works just fine, at least it has for me going on 20 years or so.
Hey, the beavers were here first and we are interfering with their habits.
I've also seen aluminum flashing used. The mesh is probably better for the tree as it doesn't hold in moisture or give undesirable bugs a place to hide.
Like the woodchucks and rabbits of other currently running threads, the beavers are actually doing better now than before we came along and knocked back the population of wolves, cougars and other predators.

Yesterday - Brownie & I went down to the far end of my little lake. It's the outlet where the beavers have a low dam. I see they are ripping out more cattail root balls and packing them against the dam. The water had dropped about ten inches in the lake. They must be getting excited.
It's a simple matter that they apparently don't understand. This "heat dome" weather condition has caused the springs to slow down. There is more water flowing out of the lake than the spring can replace, plus increased evaporation. It will all self correct this fall with the rains. I AM glad to see that they are reinforcing the dam.

As stated above build an outlet through the dam. There are various plans on the net to do it in a way that the beavers cannot figure out. They will abandon the dam when they realize they cannot patch the "hole" in the dam.
That is assuming they are being destructive to the land by building where they did and/or knocking down all the trees in the area.

Forgot to mention. When we were checking the beaver dam I noticed that all their work has been fruitful. The entire lake system has raised three inches. That's roughly 815,000 more gallons in storage. The inflow is now greater than the discharge.

This is how I fooled the beavers that were damming the spillway:
Staked the inlet down low, water would continue to siphon until level dropped low enough to let air in, breaking the siphon.

Last time I checked, in NC it is illegal to live trap and move beavers. So check one's state laws before doing so.
