Becarefull if buying anything with perkins 1104-44t engine

I've been hearing of people having engine failures with the perkins 1104-44t engine. I thought yaw would like to know since some of you may have a mulcher mounted on a ASV, etc. or looking to buy one.
Is this the same engine as the perkins 1104D? we have a 2006 Massey 5455 with only 3000 hours and the head has blown! Massey are saying that the type of antifreeze used in the service has eaten into the block so it requires a new engine and we will have to pay, we spoke to Perkins and off the record a man said that this was a load of rubbish, we then relayed this to massey and they have since told the man from perkins to back off and not to talk to us any longer!!! any help out their would be much appreciated.

Did you use the specified anti-freeze? You are supposed to use a particular type. My 5455 has 4300 hours on it now. I had trouble with breaking the timing cover, the alternator rips off of it.

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life.

The perkins engine that I was talking about were in ASV's with mulching heads. I haven't heard of alot problems with perkins engines used in a tractor type application. Good luck getting it sorted out.

Its the same engine used in both apps. Just a few different accessories such as the cooling package and oil pan.

And a slightly different workload, less stuff building up on the cooling system and more room to breath.

Heavyduty, Just a bit of advise from Down Under don't make unsubstantiated comments on something you know absolutely nothing about. It's people like you who make these forums absolutly rubbish for the average punter trying to identify a problem. I am an Engine Reconditioner and have just rebuilt a 1104-44t from a ASV with mulching head which failed due to overheating at only 200 hours. The cause was a SEVERELY blocked radiator as a result of the sap/dust combination. Is the engine/Perkins to blame - clearly not, the operator obviously for not monitoring the temp gauge, ASV - definitely for marketing a machine with design issues for the environment it is working in. The bearing issues refered to in some of these posts are likely related to the same issue, continued running at elavated temps will break down the oil.

If you go back and read mate, you will understand the problems many people had with the Perkins motor in a mulching app in the USA. All the people that had perkins powered machines in 2005, now use something else. Where's Perkins at in 2012? That speaks for itself. You and/or Perkins can sue me if you have a problem with my personal opinion on this subject. Good day, mate.

I don't know if you know this or NOT, but you are actually agreeing with the guy down under even though you think you are making a point.

You said in your not so clever rebuttal ..."many people had with the Perkins motor in a mulching app in the USA."...Ahhhhh, that's pretty much what the guy from down under said. He said teh engine is good the APPLICATION IS POOR.

So to answer your question THEY REDESIGNED THE APPLICATION.
......"He had lots of problems with over heating until he updated the location over the roof. he still had some problems with the radiator and cooler because he brush cuts low lying areas with bullrushes sometimes and the stuff is like cotton. He demoed the new PT100 forestry on Thursday and said the machine is the real deal. he told me that the machines reversible fan can be activated from inside the cab or it can operate on the automatic timer"

So to answer WHERE DID THE PERKINS ENGINE GO? So you are W-R-O-N-G they are NOT using something else. They are using P-E-R-K-I-N-S

Well it went in the TEREX 2012 Forestry Mulcher unit. Model Perkins 1104D-44T

Slow your roll and reread. I said, the people that I personally knew in 2005, that had Perkins powered mulchers, now use something else. Nobody, that I know (now in 2012) use a Terex mulcher. If you want to put all your money in Terex stock, go for it. Reading something and understanding what you read are two differnt things.

Just to make it CLEAR, all 20 or so mulchers that I know, from my little area of the USA, do not run a Terex or Perkins powered mulcher.;)

I'm sure someone will come along and get it twisted. I can't help that.:confused2:

HEAVYDUTY, Ever dissmantled inspected and assessed one of these engines in a ASV for cause of failure, would you know what you where looking at if you did? - no thought not!!

Your pretty HEAVY on the opinion and light DUTY on facts, down under we try to use our heads to solve a problem - not our mouths - mate!

G'day Cat Driver, can you point me in the direction of some solutions to the radiator blocking issue on this model ASV? I don't want the owner coming back saying "be carefull if getting any work done with this guy my engine didn't last"

Regards,

I know, people have joined TBN just to get a couple cents worth. I have done my part in getting my opinion out and increased membership at the same time. Can I get a free TBN tee shirt or something? I had to go a few rounds with Digdeep and now a couple of new bloods are gangin up. LET'S GET IT ON.:licking:

As far as I know, Perkins doesn't supply the radiator or cooling package for either model. You let anything overheat and it won't be good. The MF5455 steep nose models have to have their rads cleaned frequently as its very small, those models are the only ones I've ever seen with engine problems.

And a slightly different workload, less stuff building up on the cooling system and more room to breath.

Campbell...I wouldn't pay too much attention to him. The Perkins engine is his soapbox. He and I did disagree on this forum in the past and I got 7 PMs from others much more knowledgeable about the mulching industry telling me to ignore his hot air so I did. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion so I let him have his and I keep mine.

Well, well, well it's my good ol buddy Digdeep. You know, I looked at your post and I thought maybe I was a little quick in calling you an #$%hole in the past. So, before I posted this, I looked at some your past posts to see how you interact with other members on this forum. I didn't have to go far before you were telling people that your sorry for coming across the wrong way and some even told you to get lost, just as I have. You have a habit of getting under peoples skin, I don't know if your mother didn't love you enough as a kid but I wanted to be the bigger person and tell you I'm sorry for calling you an #$%hole. I do agree with you on one thing, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and YOU should have left it at that.

I keep my equipment maintained to the extreame. We change oil every 150 hours, change air filters weekly, blow out air filters twice daily and blow the radiator out every 4 hours of operation. My machine is also equipped with a clean fix revesable fan. I am the operator!! and it was not anything we did.It is a defective engine that perkins and asv are aware of and are hoping that the volume of engines of this kind that they produce will mask the problems they are having with a certain batch of bad ones. All well and good unless you are trying to make a living and feed your family using one of the bad ones then it "sucks".

A certain batch of bad ones... Perkins engines are notorious for head gasket problems, even in light duty telehandler applications (a blown head gasket may look like an overheating problem in a mulcher, but you can identify cause and result in a light duty application like a telehandler, putting bricks on the scaffold a few hours a day at half throttle...)

Perkins were good engines in the day of the P3 and P4 engines...
