Wagtail, ‘bout dropped my iPad when you mentioned El Presidente. In general, I don’t care for Caribbean beers, and prefer microbrews, but Presidente is downright tasty.

As a kid, when I thought I was freezing to death at winter Boy Scout survival camp, a buddy's contraband can of Chef Boyardee ravioli was the best thing on earth. Back at home, in the warmth of my parent's house, I begged mom to buy me some of that great canned gold that saved my life. She did. I dug in. It was awful! :p

A couple of years ago, I noticed so much of that stuff on the shelves in the grocery store that I decided to try it. I was sure glad I only bought one can; didn't waste too much money.

Now, if we're discussing the BEST beer you've ever tasted I'd have to say "El Presidente" from the Dominica Republic. Two & a half glass bottle!

Perhaps it was the hot, muggy day and I was truly parched but that beer slaked my thirst like none has ever done. Pure joy to drink during a Navy port visit to Santo Domingo.

... and that was well over 40 years ago.

People are dying from something they are drinking in the Dominican Republic. Probably somebody making faulty boot leg liquor and selling it to the cantinas.

Awhile back I was in New Zealand. A bartender there told me that "American beer was like making love in a canoe. It's f**cking close to water." :D

I told that joke to the locals in a small pub in Ireland when they asked why I didn't order a Cooours (aka Coors) (I had a Guinness). I had to explain what a "canoe" is. When in Ireland its Guinness or Smithwicks.

Here it's an IPA or a Stout or Porter. I like Yungling Porter even tho' it's actually a black lager. I usually keep some Hamm's in the fridge; it's my soda beer. Then I also have some Founder's All Day IPA or Centennial IPA or, best IPA in these parts, Troegs Perpetual.

I survived for two weeks on an army base in the 60's, the food(?) has left an indelible as well as inedible scar on my memory.
It was good to get back to my air force base.

Worst beer story my version...

In a dire situation (long story, nothing else to drink)...the only libation available was a case of Old Milwaukee light that had been burned in a boat/marina fire to the point there was no labeling on the cans...we also drank it warm...!

Micro breweries are the new wineries, they are everywhere, we even have one in our small town of about 2500, within a 100km radius there would be hundreds of them and I would not have a hope of ever visiting them all.
A glut of wineries has seen a lot go and the land reclaimed for other agricultural pursuits, a friend of ours have 2 acres of vines for their own use and they make a nice shiraz and semillon blanc, they give a few away but it is not a commercial pursuit.
We were going to put in hops last year but it was way too dry so it didn't come to fruition.
A beer I would love to try and get hold of just because we are into horses is Kentucky Horse Piss, I have seen it on the web but never for sale anywhere.

Mine is a can of coors, left in the back of an open topped cj1 for a year. Rolled around and wore most the paint off. We were up in the hills and plunked it into a snow bank for later consumption. I popped the can, took a sip and handed it to my buddy, held it in my mouth till just after my buddy took a good glug, then we both spit it out.
