I have an opportunity to pick up a new Befco tiller for a great price and was hoping to get some input on how they perform. I know very little about them and was looking at both the T30 and T40 models. I will putting it behind a B7510 Kubota. Thanks in advance.

What size tiller are you looking at?
A couple of things.... When purchasing you want a slip clutch not shear pins on the PTO shaft. Also Gear drive is generally thought to be stronger/better than chain drive. 6 tines per hub rather than 4 . The pros and cons of reverse tine tillers can be argued forever.. but generally I'm told a forward tine tiller is better for mixing in soil ammendments but a reverse tine tiller will give you excellent soil preperation in less passes.

I own a few befco implements IMHO they make a great product.I own a york rake,3 pt, post hole digger and spreader.If the tiller is in good condition BUY IT.coobie

I don't own any Befco implements but I have looked at them while shopping around. I can say that all the implements I have looked at from them look to be very well made. So if the deal looks good I would not hesitate to buy a Befco implement.

Like cmhyland said, 6 tines per flange is preferred as well as a slip clutch driveline. A larger tine bar is more durable and longer lasting that the tiny ones found on some tillers. We offer a couple models of Phoenix tillers that work great with small compact tractors like yours. The T-4 48" value model or the T5-48" tiller will fit your tractor best. The King Kutter 48" XB gear driven tiller is also designed specifically for tractors like yours. Like the Phoenix tillers, all King Kutter tillers feature a slip clutch and 6 tines per flange. We have used a Rotomec (same as Befco) tiller here on our daylilly operation for 6 years without any issues. Very durable and does a great job behind my mom's Kubota B3030. In ours the chain is just greased and after MANY hours we haven't had any issues with the chain at all. Befco makes good equipment. Our is 42 inches and we offset it to take out one tire tread and thats good enough. I"ve got a Kuhn that takes out both treads on my Kubota L5040 and it replaceed a offset JD 660. Really no advantage to having the tiller take out both tire tracks in my real world experiance. Don't get more tiller than you tractor can handle. Everyone says get a wide tiller that takes out both tracks and you can till with low HP tractors. I disagree. If your tilling deep, and my Kuhn tills 9+ inches deep, you'll be using LOTS of power even in loam soil. If you get a more narrow tiller and offset it to take out one tire that will still leave you a very smooth garden just with ONE tractor track down the middle at the end of tilling it. Big deal. I've found it much better to balance you tiller to your tractor to cause less strain on your tractor. For your sized tractor I would get either the 30 or the 40 series and get 42 inches and offset it to take out one tire. You'll love that combo.

I have an old BEFCO 48" tiller that even after being well used by two previous owners it still works great...very quiet and smooth...it came with a slip clutch...it's a digger...!
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. After talking with Befco, I had my buddy order me a T30-250 to try.

OK, so I got my Befco tiller and was finally able to sink it in the ground. I am truly pleased with the results so far as this thing really digs up the soil. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see the color match was almost spot on with my Kubota.:thumbsup:

What is the negative on a Shear-pin model? I am also looking at a Befco. I believe it's a 150-t30. It's used, but very lightly used.

A shear pin model does exactly as it sounds, shears a pin which will render the cutter useless until you replace that pin. It sacrifices the shear pin vs. major damage to he cutter. The slip clutch will just slip and the cutter will continue to work.
You have to carry tools and extra pins if you have a shear pin type cutter.
Slip clutch are almost always preferred.
